Now he\u2019s finally had a chance to see the finished film starring Robert Pattinson, the To Catch a Predator host has some notes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directed by Lance Oppenheim, the new movie stars <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/09\/28\/primetimes-creator-explains-meaning-behind-the-demon-haunting-chris-hansen-in-the-ending\/\">Pattinson as Hansen<\/a>, tracking the rise of the NBC reality series in which men soliciting sex with minors were caught and confronted on camera.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/primetime\/\">Primetime<\/a> has run into controversy for its depiction of Hansen, not least from Hansen himself, who was not involved in its development. <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/a24\/\">A24<\/a> reportedly didn\u2019t approach him until May 2026 when the ad campaign ramped up, inviting him for a pre-release screening.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in August, he said on Jesse Watters\u2019 Primetime that he walked away without seeing it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Primetime | Official Trailer HD | A24\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5fHXyqQOKL8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was supposed to see it at 10 o\u2019clock this morning at A24 offices,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe lawyers at A24 wanted me to sign away my rights to my name, image and brand, essentially. As well as any potential legal rights that would come out of the movie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A source with knowledge later told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/creative-content\/movies\/chris-hansen-wont-sign-away-rights-primetime-a24\/\">The Wrap<\/a> that the NDA was just a standard document all preview audiences were required to sign to avoid spoilers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, Hansen acknowledged on the Serialously with Annie Elise podcast that he thought it would be \u201csilly\u201d for him to criticise a movie he hadn&#8217;t yet seen.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this is far from the only <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/09\/25\/robert-pattinson-responds-as-chris-hansen-calls-a24s-primetime-essentially-a-horror-film\/\">off-screen drama<\/a> that\u2019s been going down. Days after the failed screening, it was revealed that he had bought ads promoting his true crime streaming service TruBlu to play before Primetime for the first four weeks of its theatrical run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The service is home to Takedown with Chris Hansen, his spiritual successor to To Catch a Predator, which ended its run on NBC in 2007. \u201cI\u2019m going to need everyone in the theatre to take a seat right over there,\u201d Hansen jokes in the ad, referencing his most famous catchphrase.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Chris Hansen says Primetime is mostly \u2018pure fiction\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"I Watched Robert Pattinson&amp;apos;s Primetime. Here&amp;apos;s the Truth\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FT2T6K_c5HQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the weekend, Hansen was finally able to see Primetime now that it\u2019s out in the US, sharing his unfiltered opinion again with Jesse Watters, this time on his own podcast, Have a Seat with <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/09\/25\/claims-chris-hansen-cheated-on-his-wife-resurface-after-primetime-but-he-addressed-them\/\">Chris Hansen<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While talking, the podcast cuts to Hansen\u2019s live reaction just moments after seeing it, where he said, \u201cIt was so bizarre and so in and out of reality. Obviously I&#8217;m not objective because the character is me, but it was so detached from reality or anything I&#8217;ve ever experienced then or now doing the investigations. I just think I&#8217;m not sure what the point of it was.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hansen also spoke to other audience members, with one saying, \u201cThe idea that you&#8217;re worse than some of these pedophiles that are portrayed in the movie is absurd.\u201d The host then replied, \u201c98% of that movie that I just saw was pure fiction\u2026 very little of it took place in real life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later in the interview, Hansen acknowledged that there\u2019s a \u201cdark humour\u201d element to what he does and sometimes he leans into that, adding: \u201cBut I think I do that in a way that&#8217;s appropriate and that is helpful in the storytelling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chris Hansen theater ad\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_0DPtMrpvAA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he feels that there was \u201cnone\u201d of his humour in Primetime. \u201cI mean, this guy was so detached. This version of Chris Hansen, played by <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/robert-pattinson\/\">Robert Pattinson<\/a>, was so detached, so unhinged, so dark, so unlikable. It\u2019s upset my colleagues, present and former.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also disputed numerous events depicted in the film, ultimately claiming, \u201cMost of it is pure fiction. They mix in some reality here and there. At the end of the day, I wasn&#8217;t blown away by it either way. It&#8217;s a movie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Closer to the end of the podcast, Watters asked whether Hansen may pursue legal action, but it doesn\u2019t sound like he\u2019s too keen on doing so.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn terms of legal action, some of the best lawyers in this part of the practice of law have looked at it and I think they&#8217;re eager to do something. I&#8217;m not sure that I&#8217;m eager to do something,\u201d he explained.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don&#8217;t want to turn this into the movie that Chris Hansen doesn&#8217;t want you to see. You can go see it and make up your own mind. And I\u2019ll use it to my benefit for all the great projects and things we have in the works.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why Primetime shows a different version of the To Catch a Predator host<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9654\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9654\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9654\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/09\/15-12.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Pattinson as Chris Hansen in Primetime\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/09\/15-12.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/09\/15-12-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/09\/15-12-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: A24<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite using Hansen\u2019s real name, Oppenheim has been pretty open about the fact that Primetime was intended to blur the line between fact and fiction, depicting the larger-than-life version of the host audiences saw during To Catch a Predator\u2019s fame.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmagazine.com\/culture\/primetime-director-lance-oppenheim-interview\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">W Magazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the filmmaker explained, \u201cAs a kid, I was obsessed with it [To Catch a Predator]. I discovered it through South Park and all the parodies, because it was off the air by then.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChris Hansen almost seemed like this guy with superhuman abilities. He could make one of these predators he&#8217;d caught in his manufactured, constructed reality do anything and obey the laws of a world where he was the most powerful person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere was so much swagger. The catchphrases and one-liners felt like Scarface. \u2018Have a seat\u2019 was his version of \u2018Say hello to my little friend.\u2019 I didn\u2019t know if I was watching a prank show like Punk&#8217;d, or a news show, or a circus with Chris Hansen as the ringleader. It was the first time I&#8217;d interacted with a bizarre media experiment that mixed truth and fiction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oddly enough, Primetime came about when Oppenheim\u2019s wife bought him a $30 Hansen Cameo in 2024. \u201cIn the video, he asks me to have a seat, congratulates me on Spermworld, and then starts talking about all the new investigations he\u2019s doing,\u201d he continued.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI thought, this is the guy I grew up with, this crusading journalist. But now, he\u2019s a strange, self-aware, hyper-performative version of himself. I started watching his other Cameos. What happened to the Chris Hansen I grew up with? Or was this always the Chris Hansen who existed?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oppenheim elaborated on creating this over-the-top version of Hansen for the film, explaining why he didn\u2019t involve the host in its creation. \u201cI felt like I had everything I needed with the Cameo. Not to sound glib about it &#8211; I mean that earnestly,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI read his book, Protecting Your Children from Online Enemies Already in Your Home. I read his blog from that time. I talked to the hidden camera operator, Mitchell Wagenberg, who worked with him on To Catch a Predator and a lot of the hidden camera shows he tried to do after.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt almost felt like we were adapting the internet&#8217;s version of Chris Hansen rather than the real Chris Hansen. You can self-mythologise all you want, but at a certain point it becomes part of culture.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/the-odyssey\/\">The Odyssey<\/a> wasn\u2019t told by Odysseus. This movie shouldn\u2019t be told by Chris Hansen.
