The director has now explained why his film still deserves the Resident Evil title.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than casting Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield, Cregger\u2019s adaptation centres on an entirely new character named Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who must fight for survival amid the outbreak.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the story is connected to the Capcom <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/gaming\/\">games<\/a> in a huge way, with its setting being Raccoon City in 1998, running in parallel with the events of Resident Evil 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a very different approach to previous <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2025\/05\/01\/ranking-all-the-recent-video-game-adaptations-by-their-chaotic-scores-on-rotten-tomatoes\/\">Resident Evil films<\/a>, which centered largely on Milla Jovovich\u2019s original character Alice, before eventually bringing in familiar faces from the games.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then 2021\u2019s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City went much more directly into the game lore, featuring Leon, Claire, Chris and Jill. However, Cregger has deliberately decided against simply retelling a story fans have already played.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Cregger knows fans wanted Leon Kennedy, but there\u2019s a reason he\u2019s left out<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsurprisingly, the decision has prompted one pretty obvious question: if you\u2019re not going to use the Resident Evil characters, why make a Resident Evil movie at all? Cregger was asked exactly that during a recent interview shared by Variety.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Zach Cregger on not including any of the characters from the video games in his <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/ResidentEvil?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ResidentEvil<\/a> movie. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xYHaNlVGSJ\">pic.twitter.com\/xYHaNlVGSJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Variety (@Variety) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Variety\/status\/2100045284172841079?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 16, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI could have. I love the games and I wanted to make a movie that was a celebration of the games,\u201d he replied.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd so there\u2019s not [those] characters in it, but if I\u2019d called this anything else, I think anybody who\u2019d played the games would be like, \u2018Can he do that? That\u2019s Resident Evil.\u2019 So no, it has to be Resident Evil. It was written to be Resident Evil.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is far from the only time the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2025\/08\/13\/weapons-2-might-actually-be-happening-as-a-prequel-focussed-on-this-iconic-character\/\">Weapons filmmaker<\/a> has addressed this. Speaking to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/au.variety.com\/2025\/film\/global\/weapons-director-zach-cregger-resident-evil-movie-26334\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Variety Australia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earlier this year, he explained, \u201cIt is obedient to the lore of the games, it\u2019s just a different story. I\u2019m not going to tell Leon\u2019s story, because Leon\u2019s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elaborating on this in a conversation with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g8QNDPF28co\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ScreenRant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he said, \u201cWhat I&#8217;m not doing in this is that I&#8217;m not going to cannibalise the characters and the stories that the games already do so well, because I&#8217;m not going to be able to improve on Leon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel like Leon exists in the games, and anyone I cast and any haircut I give him or any line of dialogue I make him say, it&#8217;s just not going to be Leon because Leon exists.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cregger later told Empire that trying to \u201cshoehorn\u201d established characters into Bryan\u2019s story would feel \u201cinorganic\u201d, adding, \u201cI have to put the story first and foremost.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"RESIDENT EVIL \u2013 Official Trailer (4K)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mNd1gb19A-c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, he\u2019s admitted that he may have been a bit \u201cnaive\u201d with how badly some players wanted to see Leon\u2019s story properly adapted for the big screen.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI thought that the fans of these games, like me, would be thrilled that somebody was coming along and turning Resident Evil into a survival <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/horror\/\">horror<\/a> movie,\u201d he told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QQqAhCL3wDM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IGN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI did not really appreciate the sentiment that, \u2018We\u2019ve been waiting forever for Leon\u2019s story,\u2019 and I appreciate that. And I\u2019m sorry that that\u2019s not the story that I\u2019m bringing here. I get it. I understand the frustration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cregger said he can\u2019t criticise players for feeling that way, given he had similar reservations about previous adaptations that didn\u2019t resemble the version of Resident Evil he loves. But he hopes even sceptical fans will give the film a chance and \u201cfeel seen\u201d by just how much of the games has made it into the movie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is not just me telling a story and slapping Resident Evil on it so I can get a budget,\u201d he continued. \u201cThis is me telling a Resident Evil story. And I understand the resistance. I really do, because I have it myself. But it is coming from a true place of love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing that shines through is that Cregger is a true fan of the games, and it appears his gamble has paid off, if early reviews are anything to go by.
