Gary Oldman has shared his thoughts on HBO\u2019s upcoming Harry Potter series amid all the backlash, and he claims it could actually be \u201cmore satisfying\u201d than the original films.<\/p>\n

Gary Oldman played Sirius Black in four of the Harry Potter<\/a> films. And for a lot of people, those movies were basically their entire childhood. Although the franchise is now heavily associated with JK Rowling\u2019s outrageous views on trans rights, loads of people still have a huge amount of nostalgia for the Harry Potter books and films.<\/p>\n

The new HBO<\/a> show has already faced loads of backlash over its casting and the decision to retell a story that is still so closely tied to the original movies. Still, Oldman thinks the new series could actually be \u201cmore satisfying\u201d to watch.<\/p>\n

So, why does he think the show will be better?<\/h2>\n

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, Gary Oldman said, \u201cWe had to cut a lot. And still we could only get the films down to, like, three hours,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He then added, \u201cI believe [the TV series is] gonna do it pretty much word-for-word. Which I think, as a viewer, would be more satisfying.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oldman also explained that \u201ca lot of character detail was sacrificed.\u201d And that is because the films had to fit within their usual \u201ctwo-and-a-half-hour window\u201d.<\/p>\n

Oldman has also previously admitted that he wishes his character had been given more to do in the movies. Speaking to IndieWire<\/a> in 2024, he said of Sirius, \u201cHe wasn\u2019t in it enough. He turned up and then he went through the veil.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also been surprisingly harsh about his own performance in the franchise. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Oldman said, \u201cI think my work is mediocre in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained, \u201cMaybe if I had read the books like Alan [Rickman], if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what\u2019s coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cIt\u2019s like anything, if I sat and watched myself in something and said, \u2018My god, I\u2019m amazing,\u2019 that would be a very sad day. Because you want to make the next thing better.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he still has loads of love for the original films<\/h2>\n

Oldman clearly still has loads of love for his time in the Wizarding World. He said he\u2019s \u201cproud\u201d and \u201cgrateful\u201d for being part of Harry Potter. He called it \u201csuch a phenomenon, the like of which I don\u2019t think you\u2019re ever gonna see again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oldman also gave credit to the original cast and director Chris Columbus, who he said \u201cset the world up and cast it\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were extraordinarily lucky to have those people come back again, and again, and again, and literally grow into those roles,\u201d Oldman said.<\/p>\n

As for the new series, HBO has not yet announced who will play Sirius Black. Ben Barnes has been heavily rumoured<\/a> by fans, but nothing has been confirmed yet.<\/p>\n
