Around 200 people manage to escape through the tunnel into Silo 17 before it has to be sealed. Shirly stays behind to detonate the explosives and collapse the tunnel, sacrificing herself so the poison can’t follow the survivors.<\/p>\n
And Lukas doesn’t make it out. He speaks to Juliette over the radio one last time and tells her he loves her before he dies in Silo 18. It’s one of the bleakest moments in the whole trilogy.<\/p>\n

The poisoned environment around the silos is basically a localised zone created by the nanotechnology. The people inside the silos have spent generations believing the entire outside world is uninhabitable when, actually, there is a living world beyond the dust.<\/p>\n
