He\u2019s still donning the oversized streetwear, tinted glasses and exaggerated slang, but this time around he\u2019s got long dreadlocks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The character first appeared on Channel 4\u2019s The 11 O\u2019Clock Show in 1998 before getting his own series, Da Ali G Show, in 2000, followed by the 2002 movie Ali G Indahouse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ali G: Who Iz I? | Official Trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6t7C4qaHihE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Ali G was always deliberately controversial. The joke was that <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/06\/all-the-actors-who-attended-taylor-swifts-wedding-because-the-guest-list-was-actually-insane\/\">Cohen<\/a> was playing an ignorant white suburban man from Surrey who had appropriated the language, clothing and mannerisms he associated with Black British and Jamaican culture.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of Da Ali G Show also relied on Cohen interviewing unsuspecting public figures in character, using Ali\u2019s ignorance to provoke awkward and often ridiculous responses. This formula was mimicked with Cohen\u2019s later characters, Borat and Br\u00fcno.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ali G\u2019s portrayal of Black culture attracted criticism even during the height of his popularity, with some comics <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/2000\/jan\/11\/race.janinegibson\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">describing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it as an \u201calibi for racism\u201d. Now, more than 20 years later, Cohen is at the centre of that same debate but in a very different cultural landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Who Iz I?, Ali explains that he\u2019s spent the intervening years \u201cchillin\u2019\u201d and decides to make what he thinks is a revolutionary new invention: a documentary. Ali discovers his longtime girlfriend Julie, now played by Morgana Robinson, is eight months pregnant and so he heads to America in an attempt to reclaim his former glory before becoming a father.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film, which also marks Cohen\u2019s feature directorial debut, arrives in cinemas on October 23. Before then, the trailer for Ali G: Who Iz I? landed on Tuesday, and some viewers have taken issue with the character\u2019s appearance and portrayal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to the trailer, one X user asked, \u201cWhy is this man allowed to do brown face and cultural appropriation in 2026?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another sarcastically wrote, \u201cThis is hilarious. I want a Jamaican person to do a parody of a Jewish man because it\u2019ll be equally as hilarious ofc,\u201d referring to the fact that Cohen is a privately educated white Jewish man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cohen himself tweeted the trailer and wrote, \u201cIn an age where a comedian\u2019s career can be ended by a single un-PC joke, I thought I\u2019d play it safe and bring this guy back.\u201d But an X user replied, \u201cAli G &#8211; a character that was racist and unfunny 20 years ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Why is this man allowed to do brown face and cultural appropriation in 2026? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tPtW1VAfh9\">https:\/\/t.co\/tPtW1VAfh9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ambereen Dadabhoy \ud83e\udeac (@DrDadabhoy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DrDadabhoy\/status\/2092298388813590954?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 25, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others have suggested that the concept doesn\u2019t work in 2026, with one person responding to a post describing Ali G as a \u201cswaggering London bad boy\u201d.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They wrote, \u201cThis tweet typifies the whole problem with Ali G. The character is supposed to be a white guy from Stains, Surrey who \u2018thinks he\u2019s Black\u2019 but because his conception of blackness is inherently racist, he\u2019s now a \u2018swaggering London bad boy\u2019 whatever the f**k that means.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A number of supporters have defended the film, accusing critics of missing the point. \u201cThe scene is not about being racist to foreigners and laughing. The \u2018comedy\u2019 is making fun of the so called ignorant white racists,\u201d said one.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But another countered, \u201cThat\u2019s the point; it\u2019s way out of date. Bear in mind I enjoyed Ali G when I was younger. In 2026, the Ali G character inadvertently does the most damage to the Jamaican\/black man even if it\u2019s supposed to be a parody of someone mimicking a Jamaican.
