Lanterns premieres on HBO tonight, bringing two of the most famous Green Lanterns into James Gunn\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/dc\/\">DCU<\/a> &#8211; and its creator has made a big promise about what we can expect from the series.<\/p>\n<p>While Lanterns is the latest entry to Gunn and Peter Safran\u2019s rebooted DC Universe, don\u2019t go expecting a traditional superhero show. The eight-part series is inspired by crime dramas like True Detective and Slow Horses.<\/p>\n<p>The story itself is set across two timelines &#8211; 2016 and 2026, the latter of which lines up with the DCU\u2019s present day, established in Peacemaker and <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/superman\/\">Superman<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although Nathan Fillion\u2019s Guy Gardner is set to make an appearance, Lanterns primarily follows two other members of the Green Lantern Corps: veteran Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lanterns | Official Trailer | HBO Max\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7UIBOsuUwc4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ahead of its premiere, showrunner Chris Mundy has addressed one of the biggest questions surrounding the series: just how much of the famously huge, cosmic Green Lantern universe are we actually going to see?<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magazinesdirect.com\/uk\/sfx-subscription\/dp\/0eabd8d0?srsltid=AfmBOopLIlOt7pwyxewFzVBSJbyrMNWGCLS2g8dh_0r3e__izVglvYFk\">SFX<\/a>, Mundy explained that the team deliberately wanted to begin the story with its feet on Earth, allowing audiences to get to know the characters before expanding its scope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to make sure that we were firmly walking the Earth first, and then hopefully you can build those relationships, and that trust inside the show, and you can keep doing more and more,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But for anyone worried Lanterns might never embrace the weirder side of its source material, Mundy made his intentions pretty clear, saying, \u201cWe\u2019d be stupid not to use everything that you can do inside the Green Lantern universe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have these abilities. They have the ring. Their world is just bigger, and the way we use our storytelling can be bigger too,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe sometimes had to remind ourselves that there\u2019s as much or as little sci-fi in it as we want there to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sound good?
