Superhero and franchise fatigue is real, but earnest, creative, well-told stories that have something to say <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get butts in seats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proof is in the pudding: <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/backrooms\/\">Backrooms<\/a> made nearly $400 million against a $10 million budget, while <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/obsession\/\">Obsession<\/a> raked in $488 million against a $750,000 budget.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all predicted that the studios would jump on this trend, and we were right. Over the past month, film adaptations of Siren Head, The Mandela Catalogue, and Cartoon Cat have all been given the greenlight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" style=\"height:500px\" ><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/creepypasta\/comments\/1uxcbmz\/all_of_these_movies_confirmed\/\">ALL OF THESE MOVIES CONFIRMED<\/a><br \/> by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/user\/Seyfertguy\/\">u\/Seyfertguy<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/creepypasta\/\">creepypasta<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the iconic creepypasta Jeff the Killer is getting the Hollywood treatment. Aside from being a solid basis for a big screen adaptation, the project itself is embracing its internet roots in a way we haven\u2019t seen yet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TikToker Savanah Moss &#8211; best known for her \u201cfever dream\u201d sketch videos &#8211; is developing the Jeff the Killer film alongside Tongal. If you\u2019re unfamiliar, Tongal is a collaborative studio that connects major brands with a network of indie creators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It essentially uses a crowdsourcing approach to allow creatives to pitch ideas, write scripts and produce media. Right now, both Savanah and Tongal are calling on fans to chime in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She announced the news in a classic fever-dream-esque <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/tiktok\/\">TikTok<\/a> video, writing, \u201cWhat if I told you I&#8217;m partnering with Tongal to develop a Jeff The Killer MOVIE\u2026 and we want your help.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/tongal.com\/jeffthekiller\">link in her bio<\/a> leads to a landing page, where users are invited to submit their character concepts for the project, helping to establish what makes him tick. Like every <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/05\/26\/kane-parsons-how-he-created-the-backrooms-nightmare-world-film-interview\/\">creepypasta<\/a>, Jeff has never belonged to one person. In this case, it\u2019s based around a haunting image of a pale, smiling figure paired with a short story about a teenage boy who suffers a violent attack by bullies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With his face permanently disfigured, he goes insane and carves out a permanent smile after being sent home from the hospital. He kills his family and goes on a rampage, telling his victims, \u201cGo to sleep\u201d before murdering them in cold blood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what turned Jeff into an internet icon wasn\u2019t that first post alone. It was the thousands of fan stories, redesigns, theories and videos that followed, each adding another layer to the legend. What makes him so terrifying very much depends on the individual.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s exactly what made <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/02\/backrooms-ending-explained-kane-parsons-reveals-solid-meaning\/\">Parsons\u2019 Backrooms<\/a> so compelling. The original concept was little more than an eerie image and a paragraph describing endless yellow corridors, but Parsons built an entire mythology around it through his found-footage series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are now countless interpretations of the Backrooms, and the same can be said about Jeff the Killer. Second, the story and ambiguity around the original photo, and the \u2018Is it real\u2019 history, lent itself perfectly to working with both the fanbase and our filmmaking community to turn it into a feature.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elaborating on the changing nature of filmmaking, he said, \u201cI believe the line between a \u2018creator\u2019 and a \u2018filmmaker\u2019 is starting to disappear. Now you\u2019re seeing creators take everything they\u2019ve learned and apply it on a much bigger scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis has been the biggest sea change in Hollywood since the original studio system broke up. It\u2019s been pretty obvious that the studios have been out of touch with the fans and audiences for some time now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd when two scrappy young filmmakers prove that they can not only build an audience outside of the system, but they can also bring that audience into theaters, it\u2019s a massive wake up call.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, Backrooms and Obsession demonstrated where the next generation of <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/horror\/\">horror<\/a> is headed; this latest announcement builds on that.
