{"id":7209,"date":"2026-08-03T15:02:28","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T14:02:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/?p=7209"},"modified":"2026-08-03T15:02:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T14:02:28","slug":"jonah-hill-beef-with-jay-baruchel-resurfaces-after-brazilian-jiu-jitsu-claim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/08\/03\/jonah-hill-beef-with-jay-baruchel-resurfaces-after-brazilian-jiu-jitsu-claim\/","title":{"rendered":"Jonah Hill beef with Jay Baruchel resurfaces after &#8216;deeply insecure&#8217; jiu-jitsu claim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A clip of Jonah Hill saying Brazilian jiu-jitsu has him ready to \u201cf**king annihilate\u201d anyone who still sees him as the \u201cfat guy from Superbad\u201d has gone viral, which in turn has reignited discussion about his beef with Jay Baruchel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The footage itself is from an April episode of the SmartLess podcast, where he argues that his years of training in BJJ have transformed him &#8211; and he gives a warning to those who still think of him as the insecure Seth from the 2007 <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/comedy\/\">comedy<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love Brazilian jiu jitsu, except my body is begging me not to love it. My wife is often like, \u2018You\u2019re not going to become a professional fighter. You know that, right? You\u2019re a comedian\u2019,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jason Bateman then asks, \u201cIf we got into it,\u201d before Hill interjects, \u201cI would f**k you up. I would f**k all three of you up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Jonah Hill says jiu jitsu has him ready to \u201cannihilate\u201d anyone who still sees him as the fat guy from Superbad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love Brazilian jiu jitsu, except my body is begging me not to love it. My favourite thing is people are like, \u2018Oh, Jonah Hill, f**king fat guy from Superbad.\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018I would f**king annihilate you, dude. I\u2019m not kidding you. Try it. If you see me, try it, dude\u2026 Unless you are way bigger than me, f**k around and find out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his bold words, his comments appear to have had the opposite effect on those who watched it, with plenty of viewers suggesting there\u2019s a level of underlying \u201cinsecurity\u201d behind it. \u201cHe strikes me as a deeply insecure man,\u201d wrote one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another said, \u201cJay Baruchel was right about this loser,\u201d and if you need a refresher, there\u2019s a history between the two actors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Jay Baruchel spoke about his issues with Jonah Hill<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Baruchel and Hill starred in the 2013 apocalyptic comedy This Is the End, where they played exaggerated versions of themselves, and they clearly dislike one another.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jay Baruchel on his relationship with Jonah Hill | Larry King Now | Ora.TV\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FJt8BJvhxGM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the film, Hill comes across as the overly nice, people-pleasing celebrity who\u2019s desperate to be liked by everyone, while Baruchel is one of the few people who isn&#8217;t fooled by the act and openly distrusts him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it\u2019s all for laughs, it turns out that this tension spilled out into real life too. Back in 2017, Baruchel was asked by Larry King, \u201cWhat\u2019s your relationship like with Jonah Hill?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He let out a laugh, before saying, \u201cYeah, there is one, I guess?&#8230; It was contentious once upon a time but I think now we&#8217;re each the devil the other one knows.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that wasn\u2019t the last time he spoke about the situation. And again, not telling tales out of school, I don&#8217;t think, but like, yeah, Jonah and I don&#8217;t get along super well, or at least didn&#8217;t back then,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once he saw the finished product, he knew it was a good movie &#8211; and him laughing at Hill\u2019s moments was what sold it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat&#8217;s when I knew it was a good movie, when I was laughing at Jonah\u2019s sh*t\u2026 I never once found funny on set, and then in the movie, I actually found myself laughing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Christopher Mintz-Plasse also clashed with Hill<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t the only situation that\u2019s been brought up in light of Hill\u2019s BJJ comments. There\u2019s also his former hatred of his Superbad co-star Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who played Fogell, aka McLovin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7213\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7213\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7213\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/08\/39.jpg\" alt=\"Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Jonah Hill in Superbad\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/08\/39.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/08\/39-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/08\/39-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Sony Pictures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, while celebrating the film\u2019s 15th anniversary, Judd Apatow told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2022\/08\/superbad-oral-history\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vanity Fair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Mintz-Plasse was \u201cvery caustic\u201d in his audition and \u201cattacked Jonah and did improvs insulting Jonah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/01\/16\/pamela-anderson-wants-seth-rogen-to-apologise-to-her-for-this-one-heartbreaking-reason\/\">Seth Rogen<\/a> commented, \u201cJonah immediately hated him. He was like, \u2018That was f**king with my rhythm. I couldn\u2019t perform with that guy.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apatow added, \u201cJonah said, \u2018I don\u2019t like that guy. I don\u2019t want him doing it.\u2019 And I said, \u2018That\u2019s exactly why we\u2019re hiring him. It couldn\u2019t be more perfect. The fact that it bothers you is exactly what we want.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to this, Hill admitted, \u201cChris was really, really amazing off the bat. And I think he was really annoying to me at that time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mintz-Plasse further elaborated on the tensions at a Fan Expo in 2024, saying, \u201cJonah Hill hated me so much after my audition. I get it. I was 17. I was not a professional actor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said he went in and Hill roasted him, so being the high schooler he was at that time, he roasted him right back. While Mintz-Plasse left feeling excited about the audition, apparently Hill was like \u201cF**k that guy, don\u2019t cast that guy\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jonah Hill Hated McLovin&#039; | Superbad | Christopher Mintz-Plasse\" width=\"540\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FSNpxNYtxRA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, this is what got him the role. \u201cI think him hating me really helped me book that part.
