Martin\u2019s books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aegon has spent much of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/game-of-thrones\/\">Game of Thrones<\/a> prequel\u2019s third chapter on the road with Larys (Matthew Needham) to save him from being murdered by his own brother <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/08\/03\/house-of-the-dragon-star-reveals-how-that-aemond-alicent-and-alys-incest-scene-was-filmed\/\">Aemond (Ewan Mitchell)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, Larys suggested Aegon forgets about his claim to the Iron Throne and flees to Essos, escaping the ongoing civil war. Although Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall) wanted him to stay and fight, Aegon realised he\u2019s neither a good man nor a good king, and sides with Larys.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this all changes in season three episode seven when an army of House Mooton soldiers\u00a0 fighting for Rhaenyra (Emma D\u2019Arcy) cuts off their escape route. It\u2019s ultimately a turning point for Aegon, who\u2019s left with nowhere else to run.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7207\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7207\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7207\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3.jpg\" alt=\"Larys, Aegon, and Tyland in House of the Dragon\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7207\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: HBO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Rhaenyra wants Tyland, Larys suggests he turns himself in so Aegon can flee, while Tyland suggests giving Aegon to him so they can flee. But Aegon shuts down both of their plans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He releases Larys and Tyland from their duty to him (although Tyland stays to fight), declaring, \u201cI shall run no more.\u201d He&#8217;d rather die as a Targaryen king than spend the rest of his life in hiding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully for Aegon, when he\u2019s finally cornered, <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/08\/03\/house-of-the-dragon-how-did-sunfyre-survive-director-answers-huge-book-mystery\/\">Sunfyre awakes from his dragon coma<\/a> and burns his opponents to a crisp. But what he says before that is interesting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why Aegon&#8217;s &#8216;ignominy&#8217; speech is so tragic<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7206\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7206\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7206\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2.jpg\" alt=\"Larys, Aegon, and Tyland in House of the Dragon\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7206\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: HBO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyland warns him that he\u2019ll die if he doesn\u2019t run, to which Aegon responds, \u201cThen I will die, but not as a fugitive. Unknown. Covered in dust. Not with an arrow in my back or trapped like a fox in a hole.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll make my stand here and be buried as a king, with my dragon. I will not have the histories say that I was slain in ignominy by my own brother.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ignominy literally means public shame, humiliation or disgrace, particularly after losing respect or honour. In Aegon&#8217;s case, he&#8217;s referring to the humiliating aftermath of the Battle of Rook&#8217;s Rest, where he was left horrifically burned by Aemond and Vhagar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He fears history will remember him as a broken ruler defeated by his own brother, and so chooses to be remembered as a king who died honourably defending his claim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As said, it all works out for him in <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/house-of-the-dragon\/\">House of the Dragon<\/a> (at least so far), but for anyone who\u2019s read <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/george-rr-martin\/\">George R.R. Martin\u2019s<\/a> Fire &amp; Blood, his use of this word in particular comes with a cruel irony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You see, in the books, Aegon does initially claim victory after Sunfyre finds his way back to him. He orders his dragon to kill Rhaenyra (Emma D\u2019Arcy) before reclaiming the Iron Throne.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cthe short, sad reign of aegon ii\u201d the way nobody likes him \ud83d\ude2d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6lcwRVO7aD\">pic.twitter.com\/6lcwRVO7aD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; \ufe0f\ufe0fluna (SPOILERS) (@daenerysim) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/daenerysim\/status\/1789150451822117004?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 11, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But his victory is short-lived. As his health continues to deteriorate and support for his rule collapses, he\u2019s poisoned before he can secure his legacy. While no definitive culprit is ever named, it\u2019s widely believed that Larys and Corlys (Steve Toussaint) were behind the assassination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s no coincidence that Martin titled this part of Fire &amp; Blood \u2018The Short, Sad Reign of Aegon II\u2019.
