Odysseus’ starving crew shoved bowls of thick, stringy stew into their mouths before being transformed into pigs. It’s one of the film’s most chilling scenes, and it even had people saying Christopher Nolan<\/a> should make a horror movie.<\/p>\n But it’s never actually explained what was in the bowls they were eating. Well, according to food historians, the answer is very different from what Homer originally wrote.<\/p>\n In Homer’s The Odyssey<\/a>, Circe doesn’t serve Odysseus’ men the revolting meat stew seen in Nolan’s film. Instead, as translated by Samuel Butler, she prepares a mixture of “cheese, honey, meal, and Pramnian wine.” She then secretly mixes in a magical drug before serving the meal.
