But as the epic continues to dominate headlines, the unexpected case of the Nolans\u2019 eldest brother has resurfaced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this week, an X user wrote, \u201cI wonder how much of Nolan\u2019s filmography is him trying to understand his brother and why he did what he did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the uninitiated, Nolan has two brothers, the youngest being Jonathan Nolan, a successful writer and producer in his own right. As well as co-creating Westworld, the brothers have collaborated on multiple projects including Memento, <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/18\/christopher-nolan-has-revealed-the-one-movie-he-desperately-wants-to-make-after-the-odyssey\/\">Interstellar<\/a>, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I wonder how much of Nolan\u2019s filmography is him trying to understand his brother and why he did what he did.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Comrade Josh (@comradejosh7) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/comradejosh7\/status\/2079750676792664364?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 22, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the height of their Dark Knight fame, their eldest brother, Matthew Nolan, made headlines for a very different reason. The case began in 2005, when a 63-year-old American accountant named Robert Cohen was found badly beaten and murdered in Costa Rica.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2008, as per <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/travel\/destinations\/central-america-travel\/costa-rica\/batman-robbin-and-murder-62wrh7nhrwn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Chicago police sergeant John Lucki said the authorities were initially investigating Matthew over an alleged cheque-kiting scheme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scam involved depositing cheques from underfunded Costa Rican bank accounts before withdrawing the money in the US, with officials estimating Matthew got away with at least $600,000 at that time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucki also alleged that Matthew had told bankers he was involved in financing The Dark Knight, even offering premiere tickets, visits to the film&#8217;s set and rides in the Batmobile to gain their trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Chicago police closed in on him, they were shocked to discover he was also under FBI surveillance. Turns out, the FBI believed he could be linked to Robert Cohen\u2019s murder, having been the last person to see him before his death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@saruuuuuuugh\/video\/7665769329899719949\" data-video-id=\"7665769329899719949\" data-embed-from=\"oembed\" style=\"max-width:605px; min-width:325px;\">\n<section> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"@saruuuuuuugh\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@saruuuuuuugh?refer=embed\">@saruuuuuuugh<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>this would honestly make a great movie <a title=\"fyp\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/fyp?refer=embed\">#fyp<\/a> <a title=\"filmtok\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/filmtok?refer=embed\">#filmtok<\/a> <a title=\"christophernolan\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/christophernolan?refer=embed\">#christophernolan<\/a> <a title=\"theodyssey\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/theodyssey?refer=embed\">#theodyssey<\/a> <a title=\"oppenheimer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/oppenheimer?refer=embed\">#oppenheimer<\/a>  <\/p>\n<p> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u266c original sound - sarah - sarah\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/original-sound-sarah-7665769475735636749?refer=embed\">\u266c original sound &#8211; sarah &#8211; sarah<\/a> <\/section>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interpol had issued a Red Notice for Matthew\u2019s arrest in 2006, and after a US arrest warrant followed two years later, FBI Special Agent Pablo Araya began monitoring his home in Chicago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI saw his wife, his kids, his nanny, and his mother-in-law, but I never saw him,\u201d Araya said. \u201cHe was hiding in Florida. He knew we were after him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, in 2009, Matthew and his wife, Erika Nolan, turned up to court for a bankruptcy hearing. Araya and his team took the opportunity and swooped in, arresting Matthew on a US warrant linked to Cohen\u2019s kidnapping and murder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Costa Rican <a href=\"https:\/\/app.midpage.ai\/document\/united-states-v-nolan-1000018765386\">prosecutors <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sought to extradite Matthew amid allegations that a Florida businessman named Robert Breska had hired him as a hitman to help kill Cohen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The request also suggested that Matthew had used the code name \u201cMatthew McCall Oppenheimer\u201d while gaining Cohen\u2019s trust. It\u2019s the strangest of coincidences, but there\u2019s no evidence to suggest any ties to <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/christopher-nolan\/\">Christopher Nolan\u2019s<\/a> Oppenheimer movie.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6948\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6948\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6948\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/oppenheimer-cillian.jpeg\" alt=\"Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/oppenheimer-cillian.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/oppenheimer-cillian-1024x575.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/oppenheimer-cillian-768x431.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6948\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Universal Pictures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that wasn\u2019t the only unusual incident to unfold following his arrest. While awaiting the outcome of the extradition proceedings in a Chicago federal prison, Matthew was accused of plotting an elaborate escape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Authorities said they discovered a rope braided from bedsheets, a makeshift harness, a modified pen clip that could allegedly unlock handcuffs and a razor blade hidden inside a bar of soap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local newspapers dubbed it a \u201cBatman-style\u201d prison break due to Christopher&#8217;s hit superhero films. Although Matthew was charged to 14 months behind bars due to this escape attempt, the murder case ultimately unravelled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In October 2009, a US judge ruled there was insufficient evidence to extradite Matthew on the aggravated murder and kidnapping allegations, finding there was no evidence he had planned the crimes or personally used violence against Cohen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After his release, Matthew has vanished from the spotlight. According to a 2024 report from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/3am\/celebrity-news\/oppenheimer-director-christopher-nolans-brother-32290456\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirror<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Cohen murder case is still \u201copen\u201d. The victim\u2019s daughter, Alisha Cohen, said, \u201cThe investigation is moving in the right direction.
