If you were confused by Melantho\u2019s (Mia Goth) fate in The Odyssey, you\u2019re not alone. Christopher Nolan<\/a> leaves the character\u2019s death ambiguous, but Homer\u2019s original poem delivers a far more brutal ending for Penelope\u2019s maidservants.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nolan\u2019s adaptation makes a number of changes to Homer\u2019s 3,000-year-old epic<\/a>, but the mechanics of the story are still there, as are many of the characters. That includes Melantho, one of Penelope’s maidservants in both Nolan\u2019s The Odyssey<\/a> and Homer\u2019s original poem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although she was raised by Penelope and treated kindly, she betrays her mistress by siding with the suitors who have overrun Odysseus\u2019 (Matt Damon) palace during his 20-year absence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She also becomes the lover of Eurymachus, one of the leading suitors, in the original, whereas in Nolan\u2019s version she strikes up a relationship with Antinous (Robert Pattinson).<\/span><\/p>\n

Melantho secretly feeds information to Antinous, who conspires with other suitors to kill Penelope and Odysseus\u2019 son, Telemachus<\/a> (Tom Holland). Of course, Odysseus returns home before the treacherous plan can be carried out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the final battle whereby Odysseus<\/a> kills the suitors at his Ithaca palace, Melantho tries to flee and, well, leave them to it. But just as she\u2019s about to exit, Penelope closes the door on her, saying, \u201cYour place is down there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

What happens to Melantho at the end of The Odyssey?<\/h2>\n

Since we don\u2019t see her death on screen, her fate is left up in the air. But it\u2019s presumed that she\u2019s killed in the blood bath of the final confrontation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
