{"id":6754,"date":"2026-07-21T13:32:53","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T12:32:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/?p=6754"},"modified":"2026-07-21T13:32:53","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T12:32:53","slug":"the-odyssey-what-the-cyclops-polyphemus-says-nobody-joke-explained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/21\/the-odyssey-what-the-cyclops-polyphemus-says-nobody-joke-explained\/","title":{"rendered":"The Cyclops Polyphemus&#8217; haunting final words in The Odyssey are more important than you think"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Odyssey*<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most horror-coded moments in Christopher Nolan\u2019s The Odyssey is undoubtedly when Odysseus (Matt Damon) and his men encounter the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/21\/how-christopher-nolan-built-a-giant-60-foot-cyclops-to-bring-polyphemus-to-life-in-the-odyssey\/\">Cyclops Polyphemus<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the film, the army head to Cyclops\u2019 island in a bid to find provisions, and they do &#8211; there\u2019s a cave full of cheese. Although the men are wary, Odysseus expects the owner to welcome them thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/21\/right-everyone-keeps-talking-about-zeus-law-in-the-odyssey-but-what-actually-is-it\/\">Zeus\u2019s Law<\/a>, a series of sacred obligations which include helping strangers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But soon enough they realise their concerns were correct. A giant one-eyed monster climbs into his home and eats two of the soldiers like they\u2019re Baby Bells. They can\u2019t escape from the cave as the Cyclops blocks the exit with a huge rock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And so, while it sleeps, they blind the creature and later escape when he lets his sheep out to graze. Since his hand brushes over the sheep as they leave, Odysseus and his crew strap straw to their backs to make it through undetected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once they\u2019re out, the Cyclops spits out more armour from his fallen soldiers, and so Odysseus &#8211; presumably in a rage &#8211; impulsively shoots the Cyclops again. This causes the Cyclops to lose it and chase them down the hill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They manage to escape by the skin of their teeth, although a couple of men who didn\u2019t make the ship are killed. He\u2019s heard calling on \u201cPoseidon\u201d for \u201cvengeance\u201d. As one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ChristopherNolan\/comments\/1uza56y\/can_someone_explain_the_cyclops_scene_to_me\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redditor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> translates, \u201cHe was basically saying \u2018father Poseidon, they hurt me bad, avenge me!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You see, as Odysseus soon finds out, the Cyclops is Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon. And Poseidon is someone you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> want to mess with. As one of the \u2018Big Three\u2019 Greek mythology gods alongside Zeus and Hades, he\u2019s the god of the sea, storms, earthquakes and horses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By bringing his son to the brink of death, <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/18\/the-odyssey-ending-explained-does-odysseus-die\/\">Odysseus<\/a> earns the wrath of Poseidon himself. The sea god makes his journey home as difficult as possible, throwing violent storms in his path, sinking ships and repeatedly preventing him from reaching Ithaca.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The consequences are devastating. Over the course of <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/the-odyssey\/\">The Odyssey<\/a>, every single one of Odysseus\u2019 remaining comrades dies. Instead, once safely aboard his ship, he can\u2019t resist boasting about his victory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his men\u2019s warnings, he shouts back his real name, revealing that he is Odysseus, son of Laertes, from Ithaca. In other words, he doxxes himself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s this moment of pride that prompts Polyphemus to pray directly to his sea daddy. Rather than simply asking for revenge, he begs his father to ensure Odysseus never returns home &#8211; or, if he must, that he arrives years late and encounters issues along the way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s the deal with the \u2018Nobody\u2019 joke?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6756\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6756\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6756\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/26.jpg\" alt=\"Odysseus in The Odyssey\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/26.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/26-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/26-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6756\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Universal Pictures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have spotted talks of this online already, but one thing <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/christopher-nolan\/\">Nolan<\/a> left out of his Odyssey is a joke that unfolds pre-attack. Odysseus tricks Polyphemus and tells him his name is \u201cOutis\u201d (Greek for \u201cNobody\u201d or \u201cNo-man\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, when he\u2019s blinded, he shouts out to his neighbouring Cyclops pals. But since he\u2019s shouting, \u201cNobody is attacking me,\u201d they think it\u2019s all chill and don\u2019t come to help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s one of the oldest and most famous examples of wordplay in Western literature, so when Nolan decided to leave it out, people had questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The filmmaker explained why in a conversation with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DWABbDtyfeA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Daily Show with Jon Stewart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, saying, \u201cIt&#8217;s a pun. Puns in translation are tough. I tried.
