The Odyssey includes a myth so iconic, it\u2019s a regular part of the modern English lexicon: the Trojan Horse. But now everyone wants to know if Odysseus\u2019 cunning trick was actually real.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Christopher Nolan\u2019s<\/a> epic sees Matt Damon\u2019s Odysseus convince the Greeks to build a giant wooden horse and leave it at Troy\u2019s gates as an offering. Inside, a group of the army\u2019s strongest warriors hide in secret, while the rest of the Greek forces appear to abandon the war by sailing away.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sinon (Elliot Page) is tasked with presenting the horse as a supposed peace offering, and he\u2019s kept in the dark about its hidden contents to ensure he doesn\u2019t give their ploy away. Tragically, the Trojans are suspicious regardless and Sinon is killed.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the Trojans finally drag the horse inside the city, the hidden Greeks emerge<\/a> under cover of darkness, kill the guards, and open Troy\u2019s gates, allowing the waiting army to return and capture the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Was the Trojan Horse real?<\/h2>\n

The short answer is probably not, but it\u2019s complicated. While historians believe the ancient city of Troy really existed in northwestern Anatolia (modern day Turkey), there’s no archaeological evidence that a giant wooden horse was ever used to bring about its downfall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, many scholars think the horse may have been a symbolic story inspired by a real military tactic, such as a ship, or even an earthquake, as horses were closely associated with the god of the sea, storms and earthquakes, Poseidon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ancient Greece historian and scholar, Julia Kindt, commented on this in a story for <\/span>History Today<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cVarious theories have been put forward accounting for the presence of the horse in ancient accounts of the sack of Troy: did it perhaps represent a siege tower or battering ram? Or a natural disaster such as an earthquake that devastated the ancient city? Or a ship carrying Greek soldiers?\u201d she wrote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter all, Homer calls ships \u2018horses of the deep\u2019 and the Greek playwright Euripides compares the horse with \u2018the dark hull of a ship\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd yet, despite the plausibility of some of these interpretations, the ancient evidence overwhelmingly depicts the horse in realistic terms and with great attention to detail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe learn the name of the Greek man who crafted the horse (Epeius) and where the timber he used was from (Mount Ida). We hear that the horse was on wheels to make it mobile; that it was moved by the Trojans into the city with ropes made from flax, and that its tail, knees and eyes were flexible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSome ancient authors mention that the horse could be opened on the side and that the Greeks used a rope or ladder to climb out of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

One thing that Kindt said can be certain is that if it had been real, it wouldn\u2019t have been standard military practice. Since it relies on the element of surprise, \u201cThe trick with the horse could only work as a one-off,\u201d she explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately, while the city of Troy was real and elements of the story tied to Ancient Greek mythology and history, there\u2019s no evidence to suggest that the Trojan Horse actually existed. But what about the war?<\/span><\/p>\n

Was the Trojan War real?<\/h2>\n

Again, Christopher Nolan\u2019s The Odyssey<\/a> depicts the infamous 10-year Trojan War, but the real life answer is a little more complicated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Archaeologists widely agree that Troy itself was real, with excavations at Hisarlik in modern day Turkey uncovering the remains of a major Bronze Age city destroyed around the same period traditionally associated with the Trojan War.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, there’s no proof the conflict happened exactly as described in literature, and many historians believe the myths blend real historical events with centuries of storytelling.<\/span><\/p>\n

Author and classicist Daisy Dunn wrote about the subject in an article for the <\/span>BBC<\/span><\/a>, discussing the excavations at Hisarlik.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvidence of fire, and the discovery of a small number of arrowheads in the archaeological layer of Hisarlik that corresponds in date to the period of Homer\u2019s Trojan War, may even hint at warfare,\u201d she wrote.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere also survive inscriptions made by the Hittites, an ancient people based in central Turkey, describing a dispute over Troy, which they knew as \u2018Wilusa\u2019. None of this constitutes proof of a Trojan War. But for those who believe there was a conflict, these clues are welcome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

If there were a conflict that took place at this time, Dunn noted how it would\u2019ve been \u201cquite different from the one that dominates Homer\u2019s epic.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is hard to imagine a war taking place on quite the scale the poet described, and lasting as long as 10 years when the citadel was fairly compact, as archaeologists have discovered,\u201d she continued.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Homer’s Odyssey doesn’t actually tell the full Trojan Horse story<\/h2>\n

This is where Nolan’s film differs<\/a> from what many people expect. Despite the Trojan Horse being intrinsically linked with Homer, the detailed version of the story isn’t actually found in the Odyssey.<\/span><\/p>\n

Literally. I read the Illiad and the Odyssey just because I wanted to read about the Trojan Horse. Guess what – not in there. <\/p>\n

The Trojan Horse comes from the Aeneid – which Virgil wrote hundreds of years later in Roman times.<\/p>\n
