Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey<\/a> has made plenty of bold changes to Greek mythology, but one has got people talking.<\/p>\n

Lupita Nyong’o’s Helen of Troy appears with a large scar running down the right side of her face, and while it’s never fully explained, it adds a whole new layer to her character.<\/p>\n

When The Odyssey begins, Helen is back in Sparta alongside her husband Menelaus. She only appears briefly, but one detail immediately stands out: The scar across her face. Menelaus even jokes about it, saying she’s now “the face that launched 1000 ships, or make that 500.”<\/p>\n

The film never reveals exactly how Helen got the injury.<\/p>\n

One possible explanation is that she was wounded during the fall of Troy. In Homer’s version of events, Helen is still inside the city when the Greeks finally sack it, making that a perfectly plausible moment for the injury to happen.<\/p>\n

But, there’s another, much darker theory. Some people think Menelaus himself could have been responsible. Greek mythology tells us he initially wanted to kill Helen after recovering her from Troy, blaming her for the devastating war. According to later literary traditions, he only abandoned the idea after seeing her extraordinary beauty again.<\/p>\n

Christopher Nolan’s version suggests he may have forgiven her enough to take her back, but not enough to leave the past behind. The scar could even hint that his revenge stopped short of murder.<\/p>\n

The theory also fits with the wider tragedy surrounding the House of Atreus. Menelaus’s brother Agamemnon (Benny Safdie) is murdered by his wife Clytemnestra, who, in Nolan’s film, is also played by Lupita Nyong’o. Clytemnestra kills Agamemnon in revenge after he sacrifices their daughter Iphigenia to secure the Greeks’ voyage home. It’s another reminder that almost every family in Greek mythology is deeply, deeply dysfunctional.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, the scar isn’t something Homer ever wrote. In The Odyssey, Helen isn’t marked by physical injuries at all. Instead, she’s repeatedly described in glowing, almost divine terms.<\/p>\n

In book four she’s described as “looking like Artemis of the golden distaff,” “Helen, daughter of Zeus,” “Argive Helen,” and “Helen with the flowing dress, a goddess among women”,\u00a0with the last phrase being a compliment rather than a literal claim of divinity.<\/p>\n

Later, in book 15, Homer refers to her as “Helen of the beautiful hair,” and “Helen of the beautiful cheeks”.<\/p>\n

While the facial scar is entirely Nolan’s invention, it arguably achieves something the original text does in a different way. Homer presents Helen as beautiful but unsettling, mysterious and impossible to fully understand.<\/p>\n

On screen, the scar instantly communicates that she’s been permanently shaped by the horrors of war, while leaving just enough ambiguity to make audiences question exactly what happened to her after Troy fell.<\/p>\n
