Calypso (played by Charlize Theron) is one of the most memorable characters in The Odyssey<\/a>, but if your only knowledge of her comes from Christopher Nolan<\/a>‘s adaptation, you’re getting a much softer version of the story.<\/p>\n

In Homer’s epic, Calypso is the nymph who keeps Odysseus trapped on her island, Ogygia, for seven years after the Trojan War. She promises him immortality and eternal youth if he stays with her forever, but all he wants is to make it back to Ithaca to reunite with his wife Penelope and their son.<\/p>\n

The relationship between the pair is also much darker in the original text.<\/p>\n

Homer presents Calypso as deeply in love with Odysseus and unable to understand why he’d ever choose to leave. She repeatedly offers him eternal life if he remains with her, and the two share her bed every night despite his desperate longing to go home.<\/p>\n

In one translation, Calypso even compares herself directly to Penelope, telling Odysseus: “I know my body is better than hers is.” She then adds: “I am taller too.”<\/p>\n

It’s a very different dynamic from the one shown on screen.<\/p>\n

Instead of portraying Calypso as an obsessive captor, Nolan’s version leans into a more compassionate interpretation. She listens to Odysseus, helps him process his trauma and gives him the lotus flower, a narcotic plant that actually appears elsewhere in Homer’s poem, which temporarily causes him to forget about his journey home.<\/p>\n

The implication is that the lotus is less about imprisoning him and more about easing the psychological scars of war. Once Odysseus regains his memories and decides he still wants to leave, this version of Calypso lets him go willingly.<\/p>\n

Many modern readers have argued that the original relationship between Calypso and Odysseus reads as sexual assault by today’s standards. Throughout much of the poem, Odysseus spends his days sitting alone on the shoreline, crying as he stares out to sea and longs for Ithaca, Penelope and his son, while continuing to sleep with Calypso at night.<\/p>\n

That said, the text is more complicated than a simple reading suggests. At one point Odysseus says he is no longer attracted to Calypso, implying their relationship may not always have been unwilling. He also shares her bed voluntarily the night before he finally leaves Ogygia.<\/p>\n

Because of those details, many classicists argue the relationship doesn’t fit neatly into a modern framework of consent. Even so, the huge power imbalance, with Odysseus effectively unable to leave the island for years, means many contemporary readers still interpret much of what happens between them as non-consensual, even if ancient Greek audiences likely wouldn’t have viewed it that way.<\/p>\n

The result is a version of Calypso that feels far more morally ambiguous than Nolan’s adaptation, where she’s portrayed as someone trying to help a traumatised man rather than keep him imprisoned indefinitely.<\/p>\n
