{"id":6630,"date":"2026-07-17T15:29:35","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T14:29:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/?p=6630"},"modified":"2026-07-17T15:29:35","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T14:29:35","slug":"a24-releases-statement-after-kane-parsons-looks-into-backrooms-copyright-drama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/17\/a24-releases-statement-after-kane-parsons-looks-into-backrooms-copyright-drama\/","title":{"rendered":"A24 releases statement after Kane Parsons &#8216;looks into&#8217; Backrooms copyright drama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A24 has released a statement in response to an unexpected copyright drama that\u2019s unfolded within the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/backrooms\/\">Backrooms<\/a> community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As many of you will know, the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/05\/26\/kane-parsons-how-he-created-the-backrooms-nightmare-world-film-interview\/\">Backrooms<\/a> started out as a creepypasta that originated on 4Chan, and while the story behind it is fictitious, the original photo was later traced to a HobbyTown store prior to its renovation and found by building owner Bob Mazza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even then, Mazza isn\u2019t the owner of the yellow wallpaper that\u2019s become synonymous with the Backrooms, and that\u2019s before we get to Kane Parsons, who took the creepypasta concept and created his own <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/05\/27\/backrooms-drama-kane-parsons-mark-duplass-curry-bakery-ghost-directing-debunked\/\">sci-fi narrative<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, there\u2019s no single owner of the wallpaper itself or the Backrooms ecosystem that continues to evolve online. And this is why the community was left so confused this week when Reddit users claimed <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/a24\/\">A24<\/a> had ordered takedowns of their Backrooms inspired artwork from Redbubble.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" style=\"height:316px\" ><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/backrooms\/comments\/1uxbpze\/creators_beware_a24_requested_that_my\/\">Creators, beware: A24 requested that my backrooms-inspired artwork be taken down<\/a><br \/> by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/user\/GnarlyNet\/\">u\/GnarlyNet<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/backrooms\/\">backrooms<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redditor GnarlyNet said on July 15th, \u201cCreators, beware: A24 requested that my Backrooms-inspired artwork be taken down. It is a recreation of the pattern from the well-known 2019 image who started the whole Backrooms lore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI find it disappointing to see a company attempt to claim such a broad connection to a concept that has been developed, shared, and loved by an online community for years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would have hoped that A24 would celebrate that creative history rather than take action against independent artists who were, just like them, inspired by it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They went on to say that while they respect the rights attached to any specific film adaptation, they shouldn\u2019t be treated as the \u201cownership of the entire Backrooms concept\u201d, including its lore and visual language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am sharing this because I think it raises an important question about what happens when large companies adapt community-created internet culture,\u201d they finished.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" style=\"height:316px\" ><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/backrooms\/comments\/1uwej6o\/whats_going_on_with_the_backrooms\/\">What\u2019s Going on with the Backrooms?<\/a><br \/> by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/user\/daisyblue45\/\">u\/daisyblue45<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/backrooms\/\">backrooms<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GnarlyNet then posted an update clarifying that Redbubble had informed them that the artwork was removed following a complaint submitted on behalf of A24 Films, and that they didn\u2019t get a direct message from the studio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI cannot independently confirm who submitted the complaint beyond the information provided by Redbubble,\u201d they added, explaining that they disputed the removal and were unsure whether the complaint was intentional or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It appears this wasn\u2019t a standalone incident, as Reddit user daisyblue45 shared a similar post claiming they received an email from Redbubble saying they had taken down two of their <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/17\/severance-creator-was-inspired-by-the-backrooms-but-the-similarities-dont-stop-there\/\">Backrooms inspired<\/a> images.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThose images are not in any way related to the Backrooms movie. In fact, they\u2019re related to literature I wrote that is LOOSELY based on the Backrooms concept. In fact, as <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/02\/backrooms-ending-explained-kane-parsons-reveals-solid-meaning\/\">the filmmaker told Film Shrine<\/a> ahead of the release of his movie, \u201cThe discourse around Backrooms is&#8230; an open source sort of project where there\u2019s no true version.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kane explained that he\u2019s \u201cpulling from that original copypasta with the image\u201d and making a narrative that \u201cis true to that\u201d while also building on it with what he believes to be the \u201cnext logical step\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat initial post was setting it down and I&#8217;m trying to take more of a hard sci-fi approach to it,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a major part of the Backrooms community, Kane himself responded to GnarlyNet\u2019s post, saying, \u201cI\u2019m looking into this. We immediately began the process to reverse it and reinstate the listing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA24 makes no claim of ownership over the yellow wallpaper, the original post referencing it, or any of the community works that have since been built around it.
