{"id":6601,"date":"2026-07-17T11:28:03","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T10:28:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/?p=6601"},"modified":"2026-07-17T11:28:03","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T10:28:03","slug":"the-odyssey-runtime-explained-imax-70mm-restriction-christopher-nolan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/17\/the-odyssey-runtime-explained-imax-70mm-restriction-christopher-nolan\/","title":{"rendered":"The Odyssey runtime could&#8217;ve been way longer if it wasn&#8217;t for this frustrating IMAX rule"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the extensive, 3,000-year-old source material, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/christopher-nolan\/\">Christopher Nolan<\/a> at the helm, The Odyssey runtime clocks in at less than three hours &#8211; and there\u2019s a technical reason why it\u2019s shorter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on Homer\u2019s ancient Greek epic, <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/the-odyssey\/\">The Odyssey<\/a> ultimately centres on Odysseus\u2019s (Matt Damon) long and perilous journey home after the Trojan War to return to his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the poem spans years of battles, monsters, gods and entire civilisations, we were all expecting Nolan\u2019s adaptation to be his longest film yet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Odyssey runtime couldn\u2019t go over three hours<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movie clocks in at two hours and 53 minutes, making it shorter than Oppenheimer\u2019s three-hour-long runtime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Odyssey | Official New Trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f_bKjZeJBBI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This does still make it Nolan\u2019s second longest film, so no complaints there. But it would have run for more than three hours had it not been for the practical limitations of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/16\/ok-do-you-actually-need-to-watch-the-odyssey-in-imax-70mm-heres-what-the-difference-is\/\">IMAX 70mm format<\/a> Nolan chose to shoot the film on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You see, The Odyssey is the first feature to be shot entirely on IMAX 70mm with IMAX cameras, and this did come with its limitations. Firstly, there are only <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/16\/the-odyssey-where-to-watch-every-cinema-showing-imax-70mm\/\">41 theatres in the world<\/a> capable of screening the film as Nolan intended it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondly, it meant it had to stay under three hours long. As Nolan revealed in a conversation with Letterboxd, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he previously challenged IMAX engineers to make larger platters or develop a system that would allow longer film prints &#8211; but it just wasn\u2019t feasible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDavid Keighley, my IMAX mentor of 20 years, who passed very sadly after he finished his work on The Odyssey\u2026 dragged me into the booth to show me the final limitation of this three-hour limit on the film prints.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOver the years, I\u2019d challenged him to enlarge the platters or come up with a clip system to hold the film end when it got a bit bigger than the platter, that kind of thing. But there&#8217;s a particular arm that would require an entire rebuild of the projection system to get beyond that. So I finally said to him, \u2018Yeah, okay. I\u2019ll stay under three hours.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6607\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6607\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6607\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2-6.jpg\" alt=\"Still from The Odyssey\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2-6.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2-6-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2-6-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Universal Pictures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This information has left some fans feeling robbed, although it was seemingly raised in response to prejudice aimed at The Odyssey\u2019s cast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ChristopherNolan\/comments\/1ux0v06\/the_fact_that_the_odysseys_runtime_has_to_be\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redditor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wrote, \u201cThe fact that The Odyssey&#8217;s runtime has to be limited because of the IMAX projectors bothers me way more than the stuff people complain about on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think they shot around 90 hours of footage. If analog projectors didn&#8217;t have capacity limits, the movie would run way longer than 2h 52m.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even then, other fans aren\u2019t too unhappy about the outcome. \u201cThe movie is shorter than Oppenheimer, they still had several minutes of runtime to play with, it&#8217;s not like they shaved everything they could to squeeze it into three hours,\u201d another replied.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn all the footage they shot, they found the best and most efficient version of the story that is exactly as long as it should be. All art has limitations, there&#8217;s always tradeoffs and compromises when it comes to filmmaking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNolan chooses to prioritise the physical film projection equipment of a handful of theatres worldwide as a tradeoff for length and he seems happy to do so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Christopher Nolan explains why the sacrifice was worth it<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wherever you stand on the debate, it appears the tradeoff is worth it in terms of the level of detail Nolan achieved through this process. Even if you can\u2019t get to an <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/15\/imax-ceo-reveals-why-there-arent-more-70mm-cinemas-after-the-odyssey-increases-demand\/\">IMAX 70mm screening<\/a>, a regular IMAX viewing is going to be epic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Christopher Nolan Breaks Down Every Format to Watch The Odyssey\" width=\"640\" picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf ever there were a film that we wanted to do entirely on IMAX, this is the movie to do it with,\u201d Nolan explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to newly developed IMAX cameras, he was finally able to shoot every scene in the format, from sweeping landscapes to intimate conversations. \u201cIt\u2019s really about taking the IMAX canvas and using it to let the imagery play out on that larger than life screen,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The director said that the format isn\u2019t just about the epic shots either. \u201cThe insert shots, getting these extreme close-ups sometimes of the detail of something&#8230; are absolutely thrilling on IMAX the same way a giant landscape is as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, while The Odyssey may be slightly shorter than it otherwise could have been, Nolan believes audiences are getting a far richer visual experience in return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>For all the
