Here&#8217;s every cinema showing The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you want to watch The Odyssey how it\u2019s intended &#8211; on IMAX 70mm &#8211; you may have to make an Odysseus-style journey to watch it. Only 41 theatres have the capacity to do so, although thankfully there is now a map to check where your closest venue is.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/the-odyssey\/\">The Odyssey<\/a> was shot entirely using <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/15\/christopher-nolan-has-defended-filming-the-odyssey-entirely-on-imax-despite-the-huge-debate\/\">IMAX cameras on 70mm film<\/a>, making it the first commercial feature ever filmed completely in this format.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, only a few dozen cinemas are capable of projecting it in full capacity. Because it was filmed entirely using IMAX cameras on 70mm film, these cinemas can project the movie in its full 1.43:1 aspect ratio without cropping the image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In layman&#8217;s terms, you simply see more. During many scenes, the picture is noticeably taller than it would be in a regular cinema, revealing extra image at the top and bottom of the frame.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of a wide, letterboxed image with black bars, the screen is almost completely filled, making landscapes and battles even more visually epic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of that, 70mm film is capable of displaying an incredible amount of detail, and the enormous IMAX screens make everything feel much grander.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you watch The Odyssey in a regular cinema &#8211; or even most standard IMAX screens &#8211; the film is cropped to a wider aspect ratio, meaning you&#8217;re still seeing the same story, just with less of the image Nolan actually captured.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;ll still have a fantastic experience, but IMAX 70mm is the only format that shows the movie at its full height.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Other formats explained<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As said, don\u2019t sweat it if you can\u2019t make it to one of the IMAX 70mm screenings. There are multiple other formats (as shown in Landis\u2019s map) that will still give you a great experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re unsure which one to go with, The Odyssey\u2019s website includes a fun little guide showing you what it looks like in different aspect ratios:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"THE ODYSSEY: Is Your Local Cinema Worth It? | Aspect Ratio Comparison Guide |\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p0vNgtbWSJY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your next best bet is IMAX standard, which shows the film in a 1.90:1 aspect ratio. For those more interested in seeing The Odyssey projected on actual film, 5-perf 70mm is the one to go for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like IMAX 70mm, it&#8217;s shown from a 70mm film print, resulting in incredible detail and rich colours. The downside is it\u2019s in a wider 2.20:1 aspect ratio, meaning some of the extra image visible in IMAX is cropped away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following this, 35mm offers a classic film experience, presenting in a traditional widescreen format.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many premium cinemas are also showing The Odyssey in Dolby Vision or other large-format auditoriums.
