Standard screenings, <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/15\/imax-ceo-reveals-why-there-arent-more-70mm-cinemas-after-the-odyssey-increases-demand\/\">IMAX, 70mm<\/a>, IMAX 35mm&#8230; suddenly buying a cinema ticket feels more complicated than it should.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"1626\">Because Nolan has become basically synonymous with IMAX filmmaking, loads of people are wondering whether it&#8217;s actually worth hunting down one of the more premium screenings. So here&#8217;s what all the different formats actually mean.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">THE ODYSSEY IMAX 70mm vs. Regular <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/d0k2SROniK\">pic.twitter.com\/d0k2SROniK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Cin\u00e9prism (@TheCineprism) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TheCineprism\/status\/2077385642544422979?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 15, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"v6iacc\" data-start=\"1628\" data-end=\"1665\">IMAX gives you more of the picture<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1667\" data-end=\"1770\">The biggest difference between a standard cinema screen and IMAX isn&#8217;t just that the screen is massive.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1772\" data-end=\"2015\">A true IMAX screen has a taller, squarer frame than the wide screens you&#8217;d find in most multiplexes. When a film like <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/the-odyssey\/\">The Odyssey<\/a> is shown in a regular cinema, parts of the image at the top and bottom are cropped out to fit the wider screen.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2017\" data-end=\"2114\">That means IMAX is the only format where you&#8217;re seeing the full frame exactly as it was intended.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2116\" data-end=\"2364\">According to IMAX, The Odyssey &#8220;was shot and designed to be experienced on the biggest film possible, and IMAX delivers on this.&#8221; The company also says it &#8220;fills your entire field of vision, immersing you fully for the best cinematic experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2366\" data-end=\"2470\">So even if you&#8217;re watching on digital IMAX rather than film, you&#8217;ll still get that larger, taller image.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Damn &#8216;The Odyssey&#8217; website shows you how the film looks across different Imax and non Imax aspect ratios. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/77t0aWL4QP\">pic.twitter.com\/77t0aWL4QP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CineHub (@Its_CineHub) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Its_CineHub\/status\/2077276837999452403?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 15, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1d1bzmc\" data-start=\"2472\" data-end=\"2507\">So where does 70mm come into it?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2509\" data-end=\"2601\">70mm isn&#8217;t the same thing as IMAX. It&#8217;s actually a film format rather than a type of screen.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2603\" data-end=\"2744\">That means you can watch The Odyssey on 70mm in cinemas that aren&#8217;t IMAX, and there are plenty of venues around the UK showing it that way.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2746\" data-end=\"3016\">Unlike IMAX 70mm, where the film moves horizontally through the projector, standard 70mm film runs vertically. Even though it isn&#8217;t IMAX, you&#8217;re still watching a movie that was captured on film and projected from film, which gives it a look that many people swear by.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3018\" data-end=\"3200\">Lupita Nyong&#8217;o has even said there&#8217;s nothing quite like watching a film in 70mm.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"um7xgq\" data-start=\"3202\" data-end=\"3236\">Is IMAX 70mm actually worth it?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6553\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6553\" style=\"width: 1466px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6553\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-16-at-12.31.42.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1466\" height=\"716\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-16-at-12.31.42.png 1466w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-16-at-12.31.42-1024x500.png 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-16-at-12.31.42-768x375.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1466px) 100vw, 1466px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Universal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-start=\"3238\" data-end=\"3475\">If you want the absolute best version of The Odyssey, then yes, IMAX 70mm is the premium experience. It combines the full IMAX image with a film projection, making it the closest you&#8217;ll get to seeing the movie exactly as Nolan intended.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3477\" data-end=\"3783\">That said, if you can&#8217;t get to one of the limited IMAX 70mm locations, a standard IMAX screening is still a noticeable upgrade over a regular cinema.
