{"id":6501,"date":"2026-07-15T14:36:57","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T13:36:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/?p=6501"},"modified":"2026-07-15T14:36:57","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T13:36:57","slug":"obsession-debate-has-taken-another-messy-turn-as-youtuber-alex-meyers-deletes-video-apology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/15\/obsession-debate-has-taken-another-messy-turn-as-youtuber-alex-meyers-deletes-video-apology\/","title":{"rendered":"Yikes, the Obsession debate has taken another messy turn as YouTuber deletes review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obsession continues to dominate the conversation, but the debate has taken an odd turn in recent weeks, leading to an unexpected drama involving a review of the indie <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/horror\/\">horror<\/a>, an apology for said review, and both videos being deleted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the film first landed in cinemas in May, the internet was for the most part in agreement: Nikki (and Freaky Nikki) isn\u2019t the real villain. That <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/23\/this-dark-obsession-sx-scene-script-proves-bear-is-the-true-villain-of-the-story\/\">label goes to Bear<\/a>, who continues to sexually assault Nikki even after knowing that his wish did in fact work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has since been confirmed by director <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/16\/curry-barker-breaks-silence-on-obsession-pay-debate-after-art-director-revealed-6k-earnings\/\">Curry Barker<\/a>, who said he turned down major studio offers to finance the film if he made Bear the hero.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, the debate rages on, with YouTuber Alex Meyers &#8211; who makes cartoons about TV shows and movies &#8211; finding himself at the centre of the chat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meyers has deleted his <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/obsession\/\">Obsession<\/a> take and the apology that followed after facing widespread backlash. Fellow YouTuber D\u2019Angelo has since shared a breakdown of the drama on his own account, having kept copies of Meyers\u2019 original videos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>YouTuber Alex Meyers deletes Obsession video and apology<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meyers\u2019 review was titled \u2018Obsession is an Insane Movie\u2019, and as is revealed by D\u2019Angelo, it repeatedly gave Bear the benefit of the doubt, describing him as \u201cjust some super socially awkward loser who has a crush on a girl.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"the &#039;obsession&#039; debate just keeps getting worse (alex meyers)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l1qtUiAknRw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He notes that Meyers repeats \u201cto his credit\u201d when discussing Bear\u2019s behaviour. \u201cAnd at no point does he ever actually acknowledge that the people pointing out the misogyny are correct,\u201d D\u2019Angelo added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meyers also got called out for repeatedly referring to Bear\u2019s rape of Nikki as sex. D\u2019Angelo added, \u201cThe only way for you to justify anything that Bear is doing is by framing all of the assault and rape as sex, which is what Alex does in this video again and again [and is] what people were calling him out for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another major reason for the backlash was the way in which Meyers discussed Nikki, having played into the \u201ccrazy Latina\u201d trope.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one clip, Meyers says in response to a still of Bear looking shocked, \u201cYou wanted the Crystal Mommy Latina experience, and you got the Crystal Mommy Latina experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the backlash, Meyers uploaded an apology video saying, \u201cThe jokes were too jokey for the subject of the movie. I do respect women. I do not think women deserve to be raped. Apparently I need to say this very clearly,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, his tone didn\u2019t go down well online, and Meyers also deleted this apology. The only thing remaining is a post that reads, \u201cI have taken down both videos relating to Obsession. I am sorry to those who were hurt by them. I will be more mindful of my words and jokes in the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Obsession discourse shows no signs of slowing down<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meyers\u2019 videos are just the latest example of how divisive the conversation around <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/11\/obsession-is-making-one-person-a-lot-of-money-and-its-not-anyone-in-the-cast-or-crew\/\">Obsession<\/a> has become. This movie is actually about how women nowadays are entitled and don\u2019t respect men\u2019s boundaries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others have criticised what they see as a growing wave of rape apology. \u201cOkay I finally watched Obsession\u2026 Bear is definitely a rapist wtf. Why was this even a discussion,\u201d said another X user.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Baker told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/curry-barker-obsession-interview-1236620580\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Bear was always the villain. \u201cWhen we were shopping this around, there were companies that told me they would give me $2 million if I just rewrote the script to make Bear a hero,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was like, \u2018I\u2019m not rewriting the script to make Bear a guy that does all the right things. So I turned down more money to tell the story that I was more interested in telling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bear actor Michael Johnston also confirmed this while speaking to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/film\/2026\/obsession-michael-johnston-inde-navarrette-oscar-interview\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gold Derby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, saying, \u201cAbsolutely, he is taking advantage of her. But how much he is aware of that changes over the course of the film.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had to not judge Bear for all the awful decisions he was making, because as the actor, I had to justify those decisions. If I had cast my own judgment on him that may have changed the way I played the character.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut it was very, very clear from Curry&#8217;s script that he&#8217;s not the hero.
