*Warning: Spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon season three episode four*<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

House of the Dragon season three episode four sees Ormund (James Norton) order for one of his soldiers to be gelded – and while that in itself is as gruesome as it comes, there\u2019s an even darker undertone to his barbaric punishment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After the Daeron Targaryen imposter<\/a> plot, we catch up with Ormund and his forces as they take over Tumbleton, and he\u2019s got the real Daeron (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) with him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ormund reveals at the end of this week\u2019s episode his true intentions: to see the young prince sit on the Iron Throne as a Hightower rather than a Targaryen. In short, Rhaenyra\u2019s (Emma D\u2019Arcy)<\/a> got even more competition heading her way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prior to this, his forces break into the homes of the Tumbleton residents to stay. A soldier named Garrick of Whitegrove sexually assaults Kat (Ellora Torchia), the wife of dragonseed<\/a> Hugh Hammer (Kieran Bew).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When her brother\u2019s wife pushes him off her, he breaks her arm. Kat\u2019s brother Leo (Abhin Galeya) then goes in to attack, but he\u2019s pulled off by Garrick\u2019s (Douglas Russell) men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The next scene shows all parties involved in front of Ormund, who doesn\u2019t mess about when it comes to handing out punishments. Without hesitation, he tells Garrick, \u201cYou have violated guest right. You have debauched yourself upon a woman and injured another.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He then announces a sentencing to fit his crime: \u201cYou will be gelded. And you will have your own arm broken.\u201d And if he tries any of this again, he will be hanged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although Garrick tries to beg, saying he has a wife, Ormund\u2019s decision is made and the soldier is dragged away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What gelded actually means<\/h2>\n

You may be wondering what having a wife has to do with this, but it makes sense when you learn what a gelding is: it\u2019s another word for castration, aka the removal of a person\u2019s testicles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Usually, the word is associated with the castration of equine species such as horses, donkeys or mules, but it can be used in other cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There <\/span>are<\/span><\/i> painkillers in George R.R. Martin\u2019s<\/a> world – milk of the poppy – but we can almost guarantee that Garrick\u2019s procedure was conducted without any relief. Thankfully, it happens off screen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But what\u2019s really interesting here is what it says about Ormund. It\u2019s a fair punishment for the crimes Garrick committed, but that\u2019s most likely not the reason he picked it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The real reason for Ormund’s punishment<\/h2>\n

As said, at the end of the latest House of the Dragon<\/a> episode, Ormund finally reveals to Daeron his true intentions: to train him up and have him take the throne as a Hightower. \u201cYour brothers are lost but you remain a Hightower,\u201d he says. \u201cNow, you must be king.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Ironically, Daeron was sent away to protect him from ruthless court politics. But Ormund never took Daeron under his wing out of concern for his wellbeing – it was merely a political move.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His punishment for Garrick was merely a lesson to teach Daeron, and a way to maintain order. There are no genuine concerns about the people of Tumbleton.<\/span><\/p>\n

This becomes clear when Garrick is dragged away and Ormund turns to Daeron and says, \u201cWe must keep a firm grip. Tensions are high. Lawlessness and disorder claw at our gates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But at the end, Ormund brings Leo back, this time in chains. \u201cI thought you let him go,\u201d says Daeron, to which Ormund responds, \u201cA righteous king must demonstrate he upholds many virtues. Honour. Wisdom. Justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Daeron demonstrates he\u2019s a fair, empathetic soul, noting that Leo only acted when Garrick attacked his sister. However, Ormund argues he \u201claid hands on a Hightower,\u201d saying the soldier is an extension of him and the crown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIs not mercy a kingly virtue?\u201d Daeron asks, but Ormund retorts, \u201cThat sounds like something your father would say.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The young prince apologises to Leo before reluctantly driving his sword into the man\u2019s chest, killing him despite clearly believing he deserves mercy.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s what makes Ormund\u2019s earlier sentencing of Garrick so revealing. At first it appears he\u2019s acting out of genuine concern for Leo and his family, but he later orders Leo\u2019s execution anyway.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every move he makes is for his overarching strive for power, suggesting he\u2019s one of the most calculating, ruthless characters in House of the Dragon season three. In other words, watch out, Rhaenyra.<\/span><\/p>\n
