And for those who slammed the idea of a remake, let\u2019s not forget that the original series was not as wholesome as it\u2019s made out to be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on Laura Ingalls Wilder\u2019s semi-autobiographical Little House books, the first iteration of the TV series aired in 1974 and ran for nine seasons, becoming one of the defining family dramas of its era.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story takes place in the late 19th century and focuses on the Ingalls family&#8217;s life on the American frontier. Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a> is having a go at the story, with a brand new cast stepping into the iconic roles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That includes Luke Bracey and Crosby Fitzgerald as Charles and Caroline Ingalls, alongside Skywalker Hughes and Alice Halsey as their daughters, Mary and Laura.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Little House on the Prairie | Official Trailer | Netflix\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jSds4Oi83Eg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When news of a modern remake broke last year, it was met with the predictable \u201cwoke\u201d concerns from conservatives. As Megyn Kelly said at the time, \u201cIf you wokeify Little House on the Prairie I will make it my singular mission to absolutely ruin your project.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netizens have been expressing similar thoughts since its release, with one tagging Kelly and complaining that it\u2019s \u201cridiculously woke on race and gender\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But original Laura star Melissa Gilbert <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=9209199472501151\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in response to Kelly\u2019s comment that she was \u201cshocked.\u201d As she put it at the time, \u201cYou have to have watched Little House on the Prairie to understand what you\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe stories we told [were woke then]. We were a reflection of what was happening in America in 1974 through the lens of 1874, and in a lot of ways we\u2019re still there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what\u2019s interesting to me is that Gilbert\u2019s point also highlights how critics seem to idealise a version of the show that simply isn\u2019t what aired on TV each week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original series wasn&#8217;t a nostalgic fantasy about the &#8220;good ol\u2019 days\u201d &#8211; at times it was incredibly bleak and, as such, realistic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The original Little House on the Prairie was far darker than *some* people remember<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For all the nostalgia surrounding Little House on the Prairie, the series wasn&#8217;t just about family dinners, prairie sunsets and Charles Ingalls handing out life lessons. She then runs away, only to then be caught by her attacker once more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is killed after falling from a ladder while trying to escape. Laura blames herself, but the real nightmare begins after Ellen&#8217;s funeral.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unable to cope with her daughter&#8217;s death, Ellen&#8217;s mother suffers a psychological breakdown and becomes convinced that Laura is actually Ellen. style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the books have been reexamined with a modern lens and criticised for the instances of racism, the TV adaptation tackled these issues head-on and used plots to highlight bigotry, anti-Semitism, and Native American discrimination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long before \u201cwoke\u201d was a political buzzword, the Little House on the
