That includes Matt Damon, <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/06\/tom-holland-reveals-hilarious-reason-he-thought-christopher-nolan-hated-his-odyssey-acting\/\">Tom Holland<\/a>, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong&#8217;o, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Travis Scott, and Jon Bernthal\u2026 phew.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nolan is no stranger to taking on historical tales, but this might be his most ambitious project yet &#8211; and if the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/08\/the-first-reactions-to-christopher-nolans-the-odyssey-are-wildly-positive-ahead-of-release\/\">first reactions<\/a> are anything to go by, it\u2019s yet another winner (are we surprised?).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The oldest known surviving copy of The Odyssey was on display at the film&#39;s junket.<\/p>\n<p>It is over 1,700 years old. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LgFDXJLFjY\">pic.twitter.com\/LgFDXJLFjY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; DiscussingFilm (@DiscussingFilm) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DiscussingFilm\/status\/2073894304708218902?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 5, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But given the original Odyssey is around 3,000 years old and is one of the most intensely studied texts in human history, Nolan wanted to approach the story from the only way he knows how.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The filmmaker appeared on the latest episode of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PfOkaa2a_iA&amp;t=1s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Hang with Amy Poehler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who asked him, \u201cHow do you compete with the imagination of people who have read and studied the Odyssey? I mean, it&#8217;s like you&#8217;re competing with the idea of the Odyssey in a way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His response? \u201cYou can\u2019t.\u201d Nolan went on to explain, \u201cWe all learned this through our work on the Dark Knight trilogy. You couldn&#8217;t compete with people&#8217;s idea of that amazing character and, at the time, 75 years of history behind it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is 3,000 years of people imagining. So you can&#8217;t compete with it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Odyssey | Official New Trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f_bKjZeJBBI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The director said that what they realised when addressing the character of Batman is trusting what audiences want is the creators\u2019 most sincere attempt to do justice to the material \u201cwith a seriousness and an appreciation of the original text.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is something he brought to the Odyssey. \u201cBut it has to be your own interpretation. Certainly, I as a film-goer, respond to that in other people,\u201d he continued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I go see a movie and I realise that people have loved this and have really tried to give you an experience and tried to put something across in the way that they really believe is great, I think people cut you a lot of slack for
