Now, she\u2019s facing a fresh wave of racist comments over a short clip of her discussing Homer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/07\/06\/tom-holland-reveals-hilarious-reason-he-thought-christopher-nolan-hated-his-odyssey-acting\/\">Christopher Nolan\u2019s<\/a> next epic is mere days away, and while there\u2019s plenty of hype, a number of cast members have been the subject of prejudice simply for existing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s been much <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/17\/transphobia-against-elliot-page-grows-as-the-odyssey-approaches-and-elon-musk-joins-dogpile\/\">transphobic discourse<\/a> after fake news emerged that Elliot Page is playing Achilles (he\u2019s actually playing Sinon, not that it\u2019s justified either way).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nyong&#8217;o, meanwhile, has had to deal with racism online, including an AI-generated video of her that incorporates shocking stereotypes. <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/elon-musk\/\">Elon Musk<\/a>, aka the richest man on the planet, also started amplifying hate comments on X.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week, Musk replied to a post about the trailer\u2019s dislikes, writing, \u201cChris Nolan desecrated Homer and groveled on his knees just to meet the woke rules required to win an Oscar. What a worm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">428k dislikes.<\/p>\n<p>This is the most embarrassing moment of Chris Nolan\u2019s career. He will be remembered as a weak man who bowed to a dying, immoral agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Woke Hollywood is dead. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/G4i6GwTl0M\">pic.twitter.com\/G4i6GwTl0M<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Homer Pavlos (@HomerPavlos) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HomerPavlos\/status\/2073819883507241399?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 5, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest controversy centres on a short junket interview in which she discusses what she\u2019d say to Homer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019d be like, \u2018So Homer, how do you feel about the screen time given to these women considering how little you spent with them?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a separate conversation with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-llJ_4fSB0E\">DC Film Girl<\/a>, interviewer Lauren Veneziani asked how her role in The Odyssey stacked up with the other resilient women she\u2019s played in the past.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nyong&#8217;o replied, \u201cWhat Chris is interested in this film is investigating the cost of war. And when you read the Iliad and the Odyssey, very little time is spent in the perspective of the women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s told from a very masculine side of things. But this film takes time to really consider things from the female perspective. And so we see in Helen and Clytemnestra how this war has affected them both.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Has the ability to ask Homer a single question- proceeds to lecture&#8230;\ud83d\ude12 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ISh24efcA4\">pic.twitter.com\/ISh24efcA4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Steph Anie (@mynerdyhome) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mynerdyhome\/status\/2074002083246756016?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 6, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey respond to it very differently because their experience of it is very different. And so for me that was very enriching to take the time to humanise them and consider what this time could have looked like for them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being innocuous and thoughtful responses to her character in the film, her answers have been clipped up and shared across X, where Nyong&#8217;o is facing backlash from all corners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discourse is reminiscent of the situation involving Rachel Zegler, who faced a wave of hate over an old comment about Snow White.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People have been perpetuating the false claim about winning awards while discussing her race and appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One suggested \u201cyou are not eligible to an Oscar unless you have a Black woman commanding a viking expedition nowadays.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another said, \u201cIs there anything more insufferable than a Black activist&#8217;s smugness,\u201d and a third commented, \u201cThe fact someone that looks like that is being portrayed in the role of someone that was meant to be beautiful is hilarious.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are even worse comments than these that we won\u2019t publish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Odyssey | Official Countdown Trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AyIZ9tiiN8I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/18\/lupita-nyongo-responds-to-racist-criticism-of-the-odyssey-role-as-elon-musk-joins-in\/\">Nyong\u2019o herself addressed the racist backlash<\/a> she received as a result of her casting prior to this latest incident.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a mythological story. I\u2019m very supportive of Chris\u2019 intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling,\u201d she told Elle.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur cast is representative of the world. I\u2019m not spending my time thinking of a defense.
