Every update about the upcoming Possession remake seems designed to make people forget the most obvious question: Why are we remaking Possession in the first place?<\/p>\n

The latest casting announcement has only made that question louder. Paul Dano has officially joined the film, alongside Margaret Qualley and Callum Turner, with Smile director Parker Finn at the helm. Robert Pattinson, who was once rumoured to star, remains attached as a producer after Paramount won a huge bidding war for the project.<\/p>\n

On paper, it’s hard to complain. Paul Dano is one of the best actors working today. Margaret Qualley has proven she can carry emotionally demanding roles. Callum Turner is a hugely exciting choice. Parker Finn knows how to direct unsettling horror.<\/p>\n

None of that changes the fact that Possession feels like one of the few films that simply shouldn’t be touched.<\/p>\n

Andrzej \u017bu\u0142awski’s 1981 masterpiece wasn’t just another horror film waiting to be modernised. It came directly from one of the darkest periods of his life, inspired by the breakdown of his own marriage. That raw emotional pain is baked into every frame. The film’s story of a spy whose relationship with his wife descends into psychological chaos before spiralling into outright supernatural horror only works because it feels so deeply personal.<\/p>\n

It’s also inseparable from its Cold War-era West Berlin setting, where the political tension mirrors the emotional collapse unfolding between its central couple. Strip away that context and you’re already losing something essential.<\/p>\n

Then there’s Isabelle Adjani.<\/p>\n

Her performance as Anna has become one of horror’s defining performances for a reason. It’s impossible to talk about Possession without talking about that subway scene, or the sheer emotional intensity she brought to the role. Adjani has spoken openly over the years about how exhausting and traumatic filming was, and reports from the production have long painted a picture of an incredibly demanding shoot. Her performance earned her the C\u00e9sar Award in 1982 and has since become legendary among horror fans.<\/p>\n

It’s not that Margaret Qualley isn’t talented enough. She absolutely is. It’s that asking anyone to recreate a performance so singular almost feels like missing the point entirely.<\/p>\n

Great actors don’t automatically justify a remake. Neither does a talented director. Sometimes a film reaches a point where it’s complete, untouchable and doesn’t need another version for a new generation.<\/p>\n

If anything, this cast announcement is a reminder that Hollywood keeps trying to improve films that were never broken to begin with.<\/p>\n
