Now, as <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/25\/the-last-airbenders-miya-cech-addresses-controversy-around-playing-blind-character\/\">season two<\/a> loses more than half of its launch audience, fans are reviving that years-old controversy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following divisive reviews, the second season of the remake debuted to 8.7 million views in its first four days. This might sound like a lot, but it\u2019s a 59 per cent drop from season one\u2019s 21.2 million views for the same time period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s safe to say that this has prompted a busy discussion online, with viewers pointing to the adaptation\u2019s changes to the original (and beloved) Nickelodeon animated show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One post comparing the two seasons&#8217; viewership noted that original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko \u201care not involved, having departed during the show&#8217;s development due to creative differences.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response, one person compared it to The Witcher, writing, \u201cNetflix butting heads with talent that adhere to the source material seems to be a regular problem over there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey really speedran losing the fanbase,\u201d said another, while a third added, \u201cIt\u2019s so bad. They take out some of the most meaningful story arcs and cram 3-4 episodes into 1. S2E1 they already cross the Serpent&#8217;s Pass and never lost Appa!\u201d A fourth chimed in, &#8220;When DiMartino and Konietzko depart from the show cause the creative is ass, then I know i\u2019m never watching ts.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why so much was changed in Avatar: The Last Airbender season two<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Avatar: The Last Airbender: Season 2 | Official Trailer | Netflix\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M_Las484swM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the backlash to these changes, co-executive producer and writer Christine Boylan has broken down the show&#8217;s approach to adapting Book Two: Earth in an interview with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.syfy.com\/syfy-wire\/avatar-the-last-airbender-netflix-season-2-changes-from-original-animated-series\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SYFY Wire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than recreating the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/04\/17\/investigation-starts-into-how-the-avatar-the-last-airbender-movie-leaked-heres-an-update\/\">animated series<\/a> beat-for-beat, Boylan said the writers always viewed the live-action version as a different telling of the same story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we started writing season two, we kept season three in mind, because we know how the story goes,\u201d she explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA friend of mine calls them buoys out in the ocean. She goes, \u2018You know you&#8217;ve got to swim to that buoy, but you don&#8217;t know how you&#8217;re going to swim there.\u2019 So, you&#8217;re going to get there, but the how is up for grabs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boylan said the writers identified \u201ccertain parts of the animated series\u201d that were \u201cnon-negotiable\u201d, but insisted an adaptation shouldn&#8217;t try to compete with the original.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;My theory of adaptation is that this is a myth, and this is a legend, and it gets told and retold and retold,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We don&#8217;t need to compete with the animated series, because we all love it so much. Here&#8217;s their arcs. How do they grow? What helps them grow? And if a story point doesn&#8217;t help them, it goes away.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the biggest changes in season two included moving Wan Shi Tong&#8217;s Spirit Library to Ba Sing Se, changing the circumstances surrounding Jet\u2019s death, and cutting several storylines from the animated series altogether, including &#8220;The Drill&#8221;, &#8220;The Desert&#8221; and &#8220;The Guru&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-executive producer Jabbar Raisani said some omissions were simply the result of production realities, revealing that \u201cThe Drill\u201d remained in development until late in production before being cut because the team \u201cjust can&#8217;t fit this in\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also said that the Earth King&#8217;s bear Bosco was ultimately removed because the visual effects costs were too high.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>So, why did the original Avatar creators leave Netflix&#8217;s live-action remake?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The controversy dates back to 2020, when <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/25\/hes-supposed-to-be-12-looks-30-the-wild-cast-ages-of-netflixs-avatar-the-last-airbender\/\">Avatar: The Last Airbender<\/a> co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko announced they had stepped away from the Netflix adaptation after two years of development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an open letter to fans, DiMartino revealed that although Netflix had initially promised to honour their vision, &#8220;things did not go as we had hoped.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5907\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5907\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5907\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/shutterstock_editorial_15410660bf.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/shutterstock_editorial_15410660bf.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/shutterstock_editorial_15410660bf-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/07\/shutterstock_editorial_15410660bf-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5907\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Chad Salvador\/Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLook, things happen. Productions are challenging. Unforeseen events arise. Plans have to change,\u201d he wrote. &#8220;But even an Air Nomad knows when it&#8217;s time to cut their losses and move on.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DiMartino stressed he wasn&#8217;t saying the finished series would necessarily be bad, adding: \u201cNetflix&#8217;s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, sources told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2020\/08\/avatar-the-last-airbender-creators-exit-netflix-live-action-series-adaptation-1203011494\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there had been ongoing creative disagreements between the pair and Netflix over how the beloved animated series should be adapted into live action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix later responded with a statement saying it had \u201ccomplete respect and admiration\u201d for DiMartino and Konietzko and remained \u201cconfident in the creative team and their adaptation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, with season two debuting to significantly lower viewing figures than its predecessor, many viewers are pointing back to DiMartino and Konietzko&#8217;s exit. But not everyone agrees with the connection between their exit and the ratings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As one fan wrote, \u201cIncorrect assumption &#8211; I\u2019m just waiting for a few more valid shows and some time to watch it to restart my subscription.
