So much went down in House of the Dragon season three episode two that you may have missed a quieter scene involving Helaena, which some fans think is a sly dig at the beef between showrunner Ryan Condal and franchise creator George R.R. Martin<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For context, the author and showrunner worked closely together for season one of the Game of Thrones<\/a> prequel series, which is based on Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, their relationship later soured after Condal made several major changes to Martin\u2019s story. The author detailed his grievances<\/a> in a now-deleted blog post published in September 2024, titled \u2018Beware the Butterflies\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In it, he criticised the decision to cut Prince Maelor, Aegon and Helaena Targaryen\u2019s youngest son, saying this weakened the horrific \u2018Blood and Cheese\u2019 plot in season two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Martin added at the time, \u201cAnd there are larger and more toxic butterflies to come, if House of the Dragon goes ahead with some of the changes being contemplated for seasons 3 and 4\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the author revealed the relationship had deteriorated even further, telling <\/span>The Hollywood Reporter,<\/span><\/a> \u201cIt\u2019s abysmal.\u201d He claimed Condal stopped listening to him after season one and that HBO eventually asked him to submit notes through the studio instead of directly to the showrunner.<\/span><\/p>\n

A few months later, Condal addressed the situation in a conversation with <\/span>Entertainment Weekly<\/span><\/a>. He said he was \u201cdisappointed\u201d by Martin’s criticism, describing the author as both a personal hero and a literary icon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The showrunner insisted he had spent years trying to involve Martin in the adaptation process, but claimed the author eventually \u201cbecame unwilling to acknowledge the practical issues at hand in a reasonable way\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Condal said his job is to balance staying faithful to the source material with the production demands of running a major HBO<\/a> series, adding that he hopes the pair can \u201crediscover that harmony\u201d one day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite Condal\u2019s more pragmatic approach to the criticism, some fans noticed a scene in season three\u2019s most recent episode<\/a> that they think is a sly dig.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
