DC’s Supergirl had a very disappointing opening weekend, and now fans are claiming the film is the victim of a social media smear campaign.<\/p>\n

After much hype, Supergirl<\/a> released last weekend. Despite all the hype surrounding the movie<\/a>, it didn’t sell many tickets last weekend. In fact, it did worse than Morbius and The Marvels – two notorious superhero film flops. But as people wonder why it didn’t do as well as it should have, many pointed out the consistent negative headlines certain publications and social media accounts are sharing about the film.<\/p>\n

Variety<\/a> in particular shared an article titled \u2018Supergirl\u2019 Stinks. Why Does Hollywood Keep Failing Female Superheroes? which seems to have rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.<\/p>\n

“Wow, Variety used to be a pretty reputable publication but is now no better than your run-of-the-mill outrage grifting YouTube channel. Time to mute,” one person responded.<\/p>\n

“Is there like a clause you guys have where if you shit on a movie you have to double down on it or what?” said another.<\/p>\n

Many have compared the online backlash against Supergirl star Milly Alcock to the similarly intense hate faced by Rachel Zegler during the Snow White press tour and Brie Larson when she was promoting Captain Marvel.<\/p>\n

Don’t worry, the negative attention hasn’t affected the expansion of the DC universe: Peter Safran, co-chairman of DC Studios, shared a statement with The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in,” he said,<\/p>\n

Milly previously talked about the backlash she was expected to receive for the film in an interview with, ironically, Variety<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess women know that this is just how it\u2019s always been, unfortunately,\u201d Alcock adds. \u201cAnd it\u2019s from a lot of people whose profiles have no photo, who are burner accounts. Or someone\u2019s name and then \u2018Dad of four, Christian,\u2019 which is hilarious to me. But I mean, whose opinion do you really care about? If you\u2019re pissing the right kind of people off, you\u2019re doing OK.\u201d<\/p>\n
