Heather Donahue, the star of the indie found-footage horror film The Blair Witch Project, has shared why she won’t be returning for its reboot despite being offered a deal.<\/p>\n

It’s been over 25 years since the original Blair Witch Project<\/a> came out, and we’re finally getting a remake. The film<\/a> broke records for making $246 million on a minuscule budget, launching the careers of the cast and crew. Most of the original small cast are returning, at least behind the scenes. Both Michael Williams and Joshua Leonard, who played themselves, are confirmed to return as executive producers. But icon Heather Donahue is noticeably absent from the returning cast and crew.<\/p>\n

In a statement shared to her Facebook, the retired actress confirmed she had been offered an “agreement”.<\/p>\n

“There seems to be some wilful confusion about my involvement with the reboot, given the use of my image and the quote above from James Wan. I want to clarify that I am not participating,” the now 51-year-old explained.<\/p>\n

She continued: “I was offered an agreement that, for me personally, raised difficult long-term questions about rights, future technological use of identity and voice, the ability to speak freely, and compensation. Ultimately, it just wasn’t something I felt comfortable signing.”<\/p>\n

After The Blair Witch Project, Heather appeared in other films and TV projects but ultimately retired from acting in 2008. Still, she clarified she wants the best for the upcoming reboot.<\/p>\n

“I genuinely wish everyone involved well. But preserving my autonomy mattered more to me,” she concluded.<\/p>\n

The upcoming reboot will be directed by YouTuber Dylan Clark and is written by Chris Thomas Devlin, who worked on the 2022 Texas Chainsaw Massacre film. It’s set for a 2027 release, and its plot and storyline are currently still under wraps, but with the success of indie horror films like Obsession and Backrooms, the excitement for the film is building.<\/p>\n
