And some fans think <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/04\/28\/theres-a-reason-the-winds-of-winter-isnt-happening-and-we-need-to-stop-ignoring-it\/\">George RR Martin<\/a> \u2018definitely\u2019 criticised this move after complaining about Sheepstealer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no secret that Martin isn\u2019t pleased with where <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/house-of-the-dragon\/\">House of The Dragon<\/a> showrunner Ryan Condal has taken the storyline, and how it\u2019s been impacted by deviations to the books.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked about their relationship by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/george-rr-martin-interview-thrones-winds-dragon-knight-1236473519\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earlier this year, Martin said, \u201cIt\u2019s worse than rocky. It\u2019s abysmal.\u201d He went on to say that they had a good working relationship throughout season one, with Martin giving Condal notes on the early script drafts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThen we got into season two, and he basically stopped listening to me,\u201d he said. \u201cI would give notes, and nothing would happen. Sometimes he would explain why he wasn\u2019t doing it. Other times, he would tell me, \u2018Oh, OK, yeah, I\u2019ll think about that.\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt got worse and worse, and I began to get more and more annoyed.\u201d This culminated in the author publishing a blog post in 2024, when season two was airing, detailing his issues with the story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was meant to be part one of six posts delving further into his criticism, but an <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/hbo\/\">HBO<\/a> executive reached out and convinced him to take it down. Now, another 2024 blog post has resurfaced that\u2019s led some fans to believe Martin isn\u2019t happy with how Nettles has been replaced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why House of the Dragon fans think George RR Martin was talking about Nettles<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5552\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5552\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5552\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/4-10.jpg\" alt=\"Rhaena in House of the Dragon\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/4-10.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/4-10-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/4-10-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5552\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: HBO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The theory stems from a blog <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/georgerrmartin.com\/notablog\/2024\/07\/11\/here-there-be-dragons-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Martin published in July 2024, during the height of debate surrounding House of the Dragon season two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While praising the episode \u2018The Red Dragon and the Gold\u2019, Martin went on a lengthy discussion about dragon lore and the rules governing the beasts in A Song of Ice and Fire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One section in particular appears to directly speak about how Sheepstealer is portrayed in the HBO series. In the second chapter, Sheepstealer is introduced as a wild dragon living in the Vale, where Rhaena repeatedly tracks and encounters him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Martin&#8217;s version of the story, however, Sheepstealer is one of three wild dragons that make their lairs on Dragonstone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explaining their behaviour in his books, Martin wrote: \u201cMy dragons are creatures of the sky. They fly, and can cross mountains and plains, cover hundreds of miles\u2026 but they don\u2019t, unless their riders take them there. They are not nomadic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He argued that if dragons naturally wandered across continents, the history of Westeros would look very different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSimilarly, the dragons of Westeros seldom wander far from Dragonstone,\u201d Martin wrote. \u201cElsewise, after three hundred years, we would have dragons all over the realm and every noble house would have a few.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5554\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5554\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5554\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6-2.jpg\" alt=\"Sheepstealer in House of the Dragon\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6-2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6-2-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6-2-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5554\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: HBO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving Sheepstealer to the Vale is what ultimately allowed Rhaena to inherit much of Nettles\u2019 storyline in House of the Dragon, and Martin\u2019s post alongside other comments he\u2019s made has some fans convinced he isn\u2019t happy with this change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/HouseOfTheDragon\/comments\/1eb58f0\/grrms_latest_post_is_definitely_about_nettles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redditor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wrote at the time, \u201cI\u2019ve been thinking a lot about George R.R. Martin\u2019s latest blog post, and in my opinion I\u2019m convinced it\u2019s about his disappointment over Nettles not being included in HoTD.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for why, they noted his criticism to have Sheepstealer in the Vale, writing, \u201cThis seems like a diplomatic way of expressing his frustration with how the show has handled certain elements of his lore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Redditor also pointed to the author&#8217;s long-standing regret over the portrayal of Melantha Jhirl from his novella Nightflyers, arguing that seeing Nettles removed from House of the Dragon may have struck a similar nerve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNettles being cut likely opens an old wound for him because, given his contract with HBO, he has no control over his characters, especially his canon Black characters,\u201d they continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSeeing Nettles\u2019 plot parcelled out for others must be gut-wrenching and takes him back to his failure with Melantha Jhirl\u2019s portrayal in Nightflyers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" style=\"height:316px\" ><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/HouseOfTheDragon\/comments\/1eb58f0\/grrms_latest_post_is_definitely_about_nettles\/\">GRRM\u2019s Latest Post is Definitely About Nettles<\/a><br \/> by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/user\/AdvantageHappy1080\/\">u\/AdvantageHappy1080<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/HouseOfTheDragon\/\">HouseOfTheDragon<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The theory gained further traction after another blog post Martin published in May 2024, in which he criticised the tendency of Hollywood adaptations to stray from their source material.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEverywhere you look, there are more screenwriters and producers eager to take great stories and \u2018make them their own,\u2019\u201d Martin wrote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo matter how major a writer it is, no matter how great the book, there always seems to be someone on hand who thinks he can do better, eager to take the story and \u2018improve\u2019 on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2018The book is the book, the film is the film,\u2019 they will tell you, as if they were saying something profound. Then they make the story their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey never make it better, though. Nine hundred ninety-nine times out of a thousand, they make it worse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>So, who actually is Nettles?<\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I&#39;m sooo mad about this change !! Unlike most dragonriders, she is not a noble-born Targaryen and her exact ancestry is left deliberately ambiguous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She earns a place among the Dragonseeds introduced by Rhaenyra, managing to claim the wild dragon Sheepstealer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than relying on Valyrian blood or a traditional dragon bond, Nettles wins Sheepstealer&#8217;s trust by bringing him freshly slaughtered sheep each day until he accepts her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She later becomes a key ally of Rhaenyra&#8217;s faction and develops a close relationship with Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How House of the Dragon gave Nettles&#8217; story to Rhaena<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5553\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5553\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5553\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/5-5.jpg\" alt=\"Rhaena riding Sheepstealer in House of the Dragon\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/5-5.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/5-5-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/5-5-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: HBO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In House of the Dragon, much of Nettles&#8217; storyline has instead been given to Rhaena, the daughter of Daemon and Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After spending much of season two searching the Vale for the wild dragon, Rhaena finally succeeds in taming Sheepstealer in the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/22\/house-of-the-dragon-season-3-episode-1-why-aemond-kissed-alicent\/\">season three premiere<\/a>. The moment fulfils her long-held desire to become a dragonrider and effectively confirms that Nettles will not appear in the HBO adaptation, unless her story is also changed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhaena\u2019s victory quickly turns into disaster. While attempting to return to Dragonstone, Rhaena is unable to fully control Sheepstealer, who is drawn into the Battle of the Gullet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dragon\u2019s actions contribute to the chaos of the battle and ultimately play a role in the death of Jace (Harry Collett), Rhaenyra&#8217;s eldest surviving son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>For all the
