While we wait for season two, now\u2019s the perfect time to unpack the wildest fan theories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the finale, <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/03\/widows-bay-episode-8-what-is-tom-hiding-in-his-basement-chair-theory\/\">Tom (Matthew Rhys)<\/a> headed to Ruth\u2019s (K Callan) house with the intention of killing her, believing she\u2019s the last remaining descendent of Richard Warren\u2019s (Hamish Linklater) bloodline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But after drugging her, he finds out that she had a secret child: None other than Tom\u2019s deceased wife Lauren (Meredith Casey). As we\u2019d predicted, their son Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick) is the true descendant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the townsfolk head to the shelter as a deadly storm engulfs the island, where we learn that it\u2019s not really for protection &#8211; it\u2019s actually a holding cell for sacrifices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Mayor Tom Loftis declares Widow\u2019s Bay remains totally safe and open to visitors.<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/WidowsBay?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WidowsBay<\/a> \u2014 Renewed for Season 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ophjrhkEqr\">pic.twitter.com\/ophjrhkEqr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Apple TV (@AppleTV) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AppleTV\/status\/2065184850940965332?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 11, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the curse entity takes its next victim, the storm stops, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/17\/widows-bay-finale-episode-10-cliffhanger-ending-ruth-death-bell-tolls-explained\/\">Widow\u2019s Bay ends<\/a> with Tom and Evan ready to go about their lives on the island alongside the other survivors. But right in the final moments, Tom hears the ominous church bells ringing out eight times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as was revealed in the bunker, each toll represents one person who must be sacrificed to the entity. \u201cOne soul for each toll.\u201d What happens next is anyone\u2019s guess, but it\u2019s far from the only mystery left unsolved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/apple-tv\/\">Apple TV<\/a> has ordered Widow\u2019s Bay season two, which is in the early development stages at the time of writing. Until then, fans are filling in the gaps with their theories that could have major implications for the next chapter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Evan&#8217;s new girlfriend is secretly part of the island&#8217;s plan<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5379\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5379\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5379\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6-1.jpg\" alt=\"Evan's girlfriend in Widow's Bay\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6-1-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6-1-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5379\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Apple TV<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A popular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/WidowsBay\/comments\/1u89x2f\/once_again_who_is_this_girl_and_where_are_her\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">theory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> following the finale centres on the mysterious tourist girl who has been spending more and more time with Evan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that the finale has confirmed Evan is the last surviving descendant of Warren, some viewers think the island may be trying to preserve the bloodline &#8211; and Ruth&#8217;s backstory may back up this theory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We previously learned that <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/10\/widows-bay-episode-9-is-ruth-really-childless-hidden-detail-theory-finale\/\">Ruth had no shortage of admirers<\/a>, and this could be the island itself influencing events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;This and Ruth saying all the men made a pass at her makes me think that the island was doing its best to get her pregnant,&#8221; one fan suggested.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others believe the same thing could now be happening to Evan. \u201cOooo and now this girl is throwing herself at Evan! The island is trying to continue its bloodline,\u201d wrote another.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The theory gained even more traction after the finale once again referenced the fact that the &#8220;pull out method just doesn&#8217;t work.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s also the mystery surrounding the character. \u201cOnce again: Who is this girl, and WHERE ARE HER PARENTS?\u201d said one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSomething seems off about her above and beyond regular teenage dirtbag behavior. Something weird. And she is literally never supervised. How long is her visit to the island, anyway? My spidey sense is tingling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Howard the Coward knew the truth<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5378\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5378\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5378\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/5-3.jpg\" alt=\"Ruth and Tom in Widow's Bay\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/5-3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/5-3-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/5-3-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5378\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Apple TV<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/widows-bay\/\">Widow\u2019s Bay<\/a> theory focuses on a seemingly throwaway line from Ruth about a former mayor known as \u201cHoward the Coward.\u201d Perhaps the nickname is hinting at a much bigger role in the island&#8217;s history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout season one, viewers learn that previous generations carefully documented how the sacrifices worked. But somewhere along the way, that knowledge was lost, leaving Tom&#8217;s generation largely unaware of what was really happening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/WidowsBay\/comments\/1u7xvni\/the_protector_of_the_island\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redditor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believes Howard may have been responsible for continuing the pact but refused to do so. &#8220;Howard was not willing to keep the agenda of sacrifices, gaining his nickname,&#8221; they theorised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to this idea, Howard&#8217;s refusal allowed the pact to gradually break down, eventually leading to the events of season one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNobody takes care of it, and the island of protector becomes a normal bureaucracy job, until the Island is not satisfied with the usual horrors and we keep to the events of the series,\u201d they added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other fans have connected the theory to Ruth&#8217;s claim that workers mysteriously disappeared while attempting to build a trolley system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRuth said that they tried to build a trolley and the workers disappeared?\u201d one viewer noted. \u201cLured some workers from off island and sacrificed them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this turns out to be true, it could be why the bells are ringing again so soon after the latest turn of events. And someone may need to step up if Tom\u2019s not willing to sacrifice his own son.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The church bells aren\u2019t audible to all<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5376\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5376\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5376\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3-8.jpg\" alt=\"Wyck and Patricia in Widow's Bay\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3-8.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3-8-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3-8-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Apple TV<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of eerie bells and island protectors, since the release of the Widow\u2019s Bay finale, it\u2019s been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/WidowsBay\/comments\/1u86hrk\/the_bells_who_can_hear_them_where_they_are_what\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">theorised<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the church bells are a supernatural warning sent by the entity &#8211; and only the chosen \u201ccouncil\u201d can hear them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firstly, episode one reveals that Tom, Rosemary (Dale Dickey), and Patricia (Kate O&#8217;Flynn) heard them, but Reverend Bryce (Toby Huss) didn\u2019t &#8211; despite living on church grounds. He only begins to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discovering the documents left behind by his predecessor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don&#8217;t think that the church bells are physically ringing,\u201d the Redditor wrote. \u201cI think that is the form that the entity chose to alert the council about its hunger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis might be because Rosemary, Patricia and Tom are 1) an official part of the \u2018council\u2019 even if they don&#8217;t know about it, and 2) have heard the stories about what the bells mean,\u201d they added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for why Evan hears them in the finale, it could be because of his role in accidentally serving up a sacrifice to the entity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut why the church, with its tied-up bells, when the sirens were right there and available? Because the entity has positioned itself (or the islander&#8217;s council has positioned the entity) as its functional god,\u201d they continued.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe videos that Dale finds talk of \u2018offerings\u2019, and despite their old-timey governmental nature they have a very religious \u2018Flandery\u2019 tone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe council even assigned the responsibility of starting the offering season to the priest. The church in Widow&#8217;s Bay is just a shell hiding the hungry monster inside, and I believe that it behaves just like the church in Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Each Monster of the Week is hiding a secret<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5375\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5375\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5375\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2-12.jpg\" alt=\"The Boogeyman in Widow's Bay\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2-12.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2-12-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2-12-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5375\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Apple TV<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Widow&#8217;s Bay introduces a new supernatural threat almost every week, and they may all be connected in an intriguing way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/WidowsBay\/comments\/1u86wgr\/who_is_each_monster_of_the_week\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">theory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, each monster was once a real person who discovered the truth about the island and tried to stop the Warren bloodline before becoming a victim themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have a theory that each of the monsters of the week that we see is an echo or a revenant of a person who found out about the curse as imperfectly as Tom and Bechir, and tried their best to off as many members of the Warren bloodline as possible,\u201d said one fan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen they died (or were buried alive), they didn&#8217;t quite go (because now they are cursed and can&#8217;t leave, even for an afterlife), but they remained behind to warn the living and exact revenge on those who cursed him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first piece of evidence comes from William the Clown, who warns Tom that \u201cthey will drag you down with them if they can.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Could it be that William was literally dragged underground as a sacrifice before returning as a ghostly warning to others?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also linked several of the monsters to stories scattered throughout the season. The Captain may be connected to a man who allegedly murdered his Warren wife and children, while the Sea Hag could be tied to the Warrens who drowned together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd finally, the Boogeyman,\u201d they added. \u201cWhat happened to him sounds a lot like what happened to Richard Warren &#8211; buried alive under a lot of cement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The pact was a truce, not a curse<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5377\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5377\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5377\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/4-8.jpg\" alt=\"Richard Warren in Widow's Bay\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/4-8.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/4-8-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/4-8-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5377\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Apple TV<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the biggest theory to emerge from the finale adds on to the idea that Richard Warren&#8217;s pact isn&#8217;t the source of the curse at all &#8211; instead, it\u2019s keeping something much worse under control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/WidowsBay\/comments\/1u7zccc\/the_pact_is_actually_a_truce_not_a_curse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redditor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argued that the island was already supernatural before Warren struck his deal, and it\u2019s tied to the black shrooms acting as part of a living organism buried beneath Widow&#8217;s Bay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The pact is actually a truce, not a curse,&#8221; they wrote, pointing to several clues, including the strange mould at the hotel, the mushrooms connected to visions throughout the season, and the tunnels beneath both the shelter and Warren property.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The supernatural element is that it has \u201csuperpowers\u201d such as the ability to summon storms like we saw in the Widow\u2019s Bay finale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe \u2018Creature\u2019 that takes people if they go outside of the island&#8217;s perimeter is the fungus itself,\u201d they wrote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe thing uses its own flesh, aka the \u2018black mushrooms\u2019, to communicate with people, it&#8217;s how it got to Richard Warren, and asked for regular sacrifices in order to have a \u2018truce\u2019, and that&#8217;s why the sacrifices happen under the shelter &#8211; it&#8217;s where the fungus is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll of this means that, although the pact \u2018stopped\u2019 the evil stuff happening in the island, it doesn&#8217;t mean that ending the pact would end the curse. It will probably make it worse. The only way to end it is to \u2018Kill\u2019 the island.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If true, season two&#8217;s biggest challenge may not be ending the pact or the curse
