Explaining the Widow&#8217;s Bay finale and cliffhanger ending"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Warning: Spoilers ahead for Widow\u2019s Bay episode 10*<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot goes down in the Widow\u2019s Bay finale, so buckle up, as we\u2019re breaking down whether Ruth dies, and what those eight bell tolls mean for the island now that we know season two of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/apple-tv\/\">Apple TV<\/a> show is definitely happening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, Rosemary (Dale Dickey) dug into the genealogy of Richard Warren (Hamish Linklater). Tom (Matthew Rhys), Patricia (Kate O&#8217;Flynn), and Wyck (Stephen Root) had previously discovered that the only way to lift the island\u2019s curse is to eradicate his bloodline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turns out, one of his daughters survived hundreds of years ago, and though their family suffered consistent tragedies, seemingly one person made it through to the present day: Tom\u2019s elderly assistant Ruth (K Callan).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the finale, Tom heads to Ruth\u2019s home, while the rest of the townsfolk take shelter after a huge storm engulfs the island. As it turns out, <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/10\/widows-bay-episode-9-is-ruth-really-childless-hidden-detail-theory-finale\/\">our theories were true<\/a>: After drugging poor Ruth, she ends up confessing that she had a baby with a married man when she was 40.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">How could anyone forget about Ruth?<\/p>\n<p>The season finale of <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/WidowsBay?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WidowsBay<\/a> is now streaming. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/L3HVPN8Kpi\">pic.twitter.com\/L3HVPN8Kpi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Apple TV (@AppleTV) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AppleTV\/status\/2067049594144330068?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 17, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She gave the baby up to be raised by the man and his family, but she always knew who the child was. And that child is Tom\u2019s now-deceased wife Lauren (Meredith Casey), meaning their son Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick) is the last remaining descendant of Warren\u2019s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So now Tom is faced with the ultimate predicament: Kill his own son to save the rest of the town or keep Evan alive and put his people in danger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, the curse makes the decision for him. After one of the islanders, Kenny, ends up getting trapped in the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/03\/widows-bay-episode-8-what-is-tom-hiding-in-his-basement-chair-theory\/\">sacrificial chamber below the town<\/a>, he becomes the entity\u2019s latest victim.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of a sudden, the storm stops and the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/widows-bay\/\">Widow\u2019s Bay<\/a> residents are free\u2026 but not for long.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What do the bell tolls mean?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5348\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5348\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5348\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3-7.jpg\" alt=\"Wyck and Patricia in Widow's Bay\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3-7.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3-7-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3-7-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5348\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Apple TV<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Tom and Evan drive away to live their lives, presumably still on the island due to the curse, the bell toll is heard ringing eight times. And as Dale (Jeff Hiller) discovered from the old informational video in the bunker, it\u2019s \u201cone soul for each toll\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe bad times will not end until the covenant is honoured, and honoured fully,\u201d the man in the video says. \u201cThe island will make its needs known.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you remember, in Widow\u2019s Bay episode three, Reverend Bryce (Toby Huss) tells Tom that the town\u2019s church bell woke him up and rang nine times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s unclear if these nine deaths were satisfied with the other character deaths we\u2019ve seen so far &#8211; such as Bryce, who died by suicide &#8211; or if eight other townsfolk were eaten by the entity off screen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either way, we now know for certain that the curse now wants eight more souls, and this terrifying cycle will start all over again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Is Ruth dead?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5347\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5347\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5347\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2-10.jpg\" alt=\"France's brooch in Widow's Bay\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2-10.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2-10-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2-10-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Apple TV<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, this is quite ambiguous. We don\u2019t actually see Ruth die, but we can assume she passed on due to the final scene, as Tom throws the Warren family heirloom &#8211; France\u2019s brooch &#8211; into the sea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why would he do that if she was still alive? Also she\u2019s in her 80s and her body went through a lot in the Widow\u2019s Bay finale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After looking through her medical records, Tom spotted a doctor\u2019s warning to not take her Oxycodone and Diazepam at the same time. Eventually, he makes the tricky decision to poison her with these medications, but as they start to take effect, that\u2019s when she tells him about her daughter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And anyway, the drugs don\u2019t appear to have done the job anyway. But as Tom hugs Ruth, Sheriff Bechir (Kevin Carroll) storms in and shoots Ruth in the head.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He knows about the curse, his wife is about to have a baby, and he doesn\u2019t want his child to grow up not being able to leave Widow\u2019s Bay. Tom tells him Ruth isn\u2019t the last descendent after the fact, although he doesn\u2019t let slip that Warren\u2019s descendent is Evan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before Bechir can get the truth, the storm stops, at which point Ruth stirs. Turns out, the bullet only grazed her head, although she\u2019s not in a good way and is confused.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t see her die, but in the final scene, Tom drives Evan to the beach and he throws the brooch in the water. Presumably, she\u2019s dead, but we can\u2019t be certain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s in store for Widow\u2019s Bay season 2?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bechir is equally confused, asking, \u201cWhy did it stop?\u201d Ultimately, the curse must have been satisfied somehow. Ending Widow\u2019s Bay with so many questions left unanswered is a risky move, especially since Apple TV only recently renewed the horror series for season two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Mayor Tom Loftis declares Widow\u2019s Bay remains totally safe and open to visitors.<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/WidowsBay?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WidowsBay<\/a> \u2014 Renewed for Season 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ophjrhkEqr\">pic.twitter.com\/ophjrhkEqr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Apple TV (@AppleTV) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AppleTV\/status\/2065184850940965332?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 11, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But director and executive producer Hiro Murai explained to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/widows-bay-season-1-ending-explained-season-2-director-interview\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polygon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> why the finale still works as a conclusion to the story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI&#8217;ve always thought about this show as a story about Tom&#8217;s relationship to the town. The throughline for the whole season is Tom accepting that this place is what it is,\u201d Murai told the outlet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo even though we don&#8217;t get into the minutia of what ultimately that thing is underneath the island, and whether we&#8217;re going save this town or not, really the arc is whether Tom can accept the reality of this place, and if he&#8217;s willing to do what it takes to sort of protect it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo me, it felt like a satisfying character arc.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the topic of whether the curse has been lifted, Murai explained, \u201cThis island has gone through cycles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere were periods that were really bad, and then it settled down and it would become mythology, and then it would rear its head again. So even if we ended the story here, it was about this cycle of haunts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although he couldn\u2019t delve into season two, as creator Katie Dippold is working on it right now, he did say, \u201cBy the end of the season, we&#8217;re kind of resetting the table, but Tom has the secret that he has to kind of keep from the rest of the town and, and he and Bechir have this sort of relationship now.
