Maddie&#8217;s New York adventure is cut short, Helen and Erik struggle to agree on their future, and Dana Sue finds herself dealing with both a devastating house fire and growing tensions in her marriage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the absence of fan favourite Ty Townsend (Carson Rowland) leaves a noticeable impact on several storylines throughout the season. But this isn\u2019t the main reason fans are complaining.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Sweet Magnolias fans slam season 5 as \u2018big mess\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many viewers have enjoyed the escapism element of Sweet Magnolias, some feel it\u2019s gone <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overboard with the saccharine sweetness of it all in its latest chapter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" style=\"height:316px\" ><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/SweetMagnoliasNetflix\/comments\/1u50z4s\/what_the_hell_happened_to_season_5_of_sweet\/\">What the hell happened to Season 5 of Sweet Magnolias?<\/a><br \/> by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/user\/AyuzawaMisaki96\/\">u\/AyuzawaMisaki96<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/SweetMagnoliasNetflix\/\">SweetMagnoliasNetflix<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking to Reddit, one asked, \u201cWhat the hell happened to Season 5 of Sweet Magnolias? This show used to be cheesy, sure, but in a comforting way. The characters felt like actual people dealing with real life problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow it feels like everyone is trapped in a never ending \u2018how to be deep and inspirational\u2019 workshop. Every conversation sounds like it was written to become a pinterest quote. Nobody talks like this. Nobody.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They reserved particular criticism for Erik, claiming his personality had changed so dramatically that he no longer resembled the character audiences had gotten to know in the previous seasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCalling him a full on red flag might be a stretch, but his personality shift is so bizarre that it genuinely feels like the writers forgot who he was,\u201d they continued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Redditor also took aim at the repeated references to the \u201cWhitley Way\u201d, admitting they \u201cphysically cringed\u201d every time it was mentioned throughout the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sweet Magnolias: Season 5 | Official Trailer | Netflix\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d8_FSNLyTAY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helen also came under scrutiny, with the viewer suggesting she now spends more time delivering speeches than having genuine conversations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery line feels like she&#8217;s either reciting poetry, giving a commencement address, or auditioning for the role of &#8216;wisest person in the universe&#8217;,\u201d they wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, their biggest complaint wasn&#8217;t directed at a specific character, but the town of Serenity itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEveryone acts like they\u2019re living in some perfectly curated emotional utopia where every conflict turns into a life lesson and every conversation ends with profound wisdom,\u201d they said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt honestly reminds me of those groups where everyone appears permanently enlightened, smiling all the time, speaking in affirmations, and acting like they\u2019ve transcended normal human behaviour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questioning what happened to the show&#8217;s more real moments, they added: &#8220;Where are the messy people? The awkward conversations? The misunderstandings? The flaws? It feels like it was written by people who have only heard about human interaction through motivational posters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their post has received hundreds of replies, with one writing, \u201cThe love for Serenity is bordering on cult behavior.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raising a different grievance, another said, \u201cMy issue is now the kids are calling Cal \u2018dad\u2019 like Bill never existed. I get Bill is no longer part of the plot but it\u2019s just weird to me. It feels very forced like they are trying to act like Bill never existed (in the story).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A third agreed, \u201cThis season is grating. I always cringe-watched it but could find enough solid plot and character to actually enjoy it. This season they are not behaving like human beings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI just finished the season last night and agree. I sat there wondering if the show was always this cheesy and weird, but I remember the first three seasons actually having some kind of plot and drama \/ real conflict that left you in some suspense,\u201d added a fourth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy the sixth or seventh episode I was hoping that they would have Helen call off her wedding just to have some kind of believable drama and not a \u2018happy ending\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this is hardly the only post on the matter. If you turned this into a drinking game you&#8217;d be wasted by like episode 4. How is the entire Erik\/Helen conflict centered around this one dumb, vague fight?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right now, Netflix is yet to confirm if Sweet Magnolias season six will go ahead.
