{"id":5064,"date":"2026-06-10T15:09:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T14:09:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/?p=5064"},"modified":"2026-06-10T15:09:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T14:09:17","slug":"nick-reiner-ex-lawyer-alan-jackson-why-dropped-out-of-rob-reiner-murder-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/06\/10\/nick-reiner-ex-lawyer-alan-jackson-why-dropped-out-of-rob-reiner-murder-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Nick Reiner&#8217;s ex lawyer reveals why he dropped out of Rob Reiner murder case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alan Jackson was originally signed on to defend Nick Reiner in court over charges related to the murder of his parents <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2025\/12\/15\/everything-we-know-about-nick-as-hes-arrested-after-the-killing-of-his-dad-rob-reiner\/\">Rob and Michele Reiner<\/a>, but he abruptly withdrew from the case &#8211; and now he\u2019s explained why.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hollywood director <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2025\/12\/15\/decades-of-iconic-films-and-shows-rob-reiners-insane-legacy-after-his-tragic-murder-with-wife\/\">Rob Reiner<\/a>, 78, and his wife, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home in December 2025, prompting an investigation that quickly focused on their son, Nick Reiner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 32-year-old was arrested the same day and later charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances related to multiple murders. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody awaiting trial.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty, though he could face either death or life imprisonment without parole if convicted. Sources previously told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/nick-reiner-was-diagnosed-schizophrenia-medication-was-adjusted-parent-rcna250176\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NBC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2025\/12\/15\/we-didnt-bond-rob-reiner-and-son-nick-discuss-troubled-relationship-in-resurfaced-clip\/\">Nick<\/a> was diagnosed with schizophrenia several years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2025\/12\/18\/lawyer-for-rob-reiners-son-issues-statement-on-jumping-to-conclusions-after-murder-charge\/\">Alan Jackson<\/a>, who\u2019s defended a range of high profile cases including Karen Read and Kevin Spacey, was originally hired by Nick last December as his attorney. But he resigned the following month, and was replaced by a public defender.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why Alan Jackson withdrew from the Nick Reiner case<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In court documents filed on Monday, June 8th, and seen by Film Shrine, <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2025\/12\/16\/shocking-details-emerge-of-rob-and-nick-reiners-big-fight-hours-before-director-was-murdered\/\">Nick Reiner<\/a> is seeking access to funds from a family trust in order to help his case. The petition also contains a declaration from Jackson in which he explains why he dropped out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Alan Jackson, Nick Reiner&#39;s former attorney, says he&#39;s willing and ready to defend the alleged murderer &#8212; if logistics can be worked out. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/txKkAWgC29\">pic.twitter.com\/txKkAWgC29<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; TMZ (@TMZ) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TMZ\/status\/2064449137009901629?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 9, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The attorney said that he and his team left due to the fact that they were not paid, and that they\u2019re ready to rejoin the case once Nick\u2019s funding is made available.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the declaration, Jackson said he rushed back to California in December after being contacted by a representative of the family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He agreed to represent Nick after being assured by family members &#8211; including siblings Jake and Romy Reiner &#8211; that the agreed-upon funds would be paid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Jackson, his firm immediately threw its resources behind the case, with lawyers, investigators, and experts working through Christmas and New Year. But he said those plans fell apart when he was later told the promised funding would not be provided.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn late December 2025, the family representative informed me that none of the anticipated third-party funding would be provided,\u201d Jackson wrote. \u201cThat position was inconsistent with the prior assurances on which my firm had relied.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, Jackson said his firm had no choice but to withdraw from the case. \u201cWithout an available source of funding, continued private representation by my firm was no longer feasible,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the lawyer stressed that he is still prepared to defend Nick if the court approves access to trust funds. Similar trusts were also established for his siblings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The filing claims the trust currently holds more than $1.5 million for Nick&#8217;s sole benefit and was designed so that he would receive half of the money when he turned 30, with the remainder distributed when he turns 35.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick celebrated his 30th birthday in September 2023, but his lawyers say he has never received the first mandatory distribution and has not even been told how much he was due to receive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His legal team argues that the money already belongs to him and should be made available so he can pay for his defence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths,\u201d the court document reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut the facts about what did and did not happen to them are not at issue in this trust litigation. Nick\u2019s criminal defense attorneys will present those facts in the criminal case.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The filing continues: \u201cLike anyone accused of a crime, Nick is presumed innocent, and he is entitled to mount his defense with the resources that are lawfully his own.\u201d The court is yet to make a decision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>For all the
