Its clever marketing strategy and enthralling trailer drew a decent crowd, and through word of mouth, it quickly skyrocketed at the box office. Beyond its commercial success, the psychological horror has also received considerable praise from critics.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">movie ain\u2019t even out yet an the edits are hitting like a train <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wSFFNdo8WH\">pic.twitter.com\/wSFFNdo8WH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; bald renate reinsve leviticus (@GayPublix) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GayPublix\/status\/2062179451455361355?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 3, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>But now, another horror is chasing at its tail. <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/film\/\">Leviticus<\/a>, directed by Adrian Chiarella, premiered at the Sundance Festival earlier this year. Now, the film has received a Rotten Tomatoes score of 97%, one per cent higher than Obsession.<\/p>\n<p>In Leviticus, two young boys must defeat monstrous entities hellbent on destroying them. Adrian said a recent rise in homophobia inspired the film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI noticed things starting to regress,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/movies\/did-homophobia-become-ok-again-backlash-inspires-breakthrough-horror-film-20260511-p5zvpy.html\">The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a>. \u201cI noticed little microaggressions of homophobia in day-to-day life. And then I noticed a lot of rhetoric in public spaces and political discourse. I thought, \u2018Did homophobia become OK again? When did all this become acceptable?\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The director continued: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re making a slasher movie or a psychological horror or a supernatural horror, they\u2019re always about fear.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u2018LEVITICUS\u2019 and \u2018GIRLS LIKE GIRLS\u2019 are both set to release in theaters on June 19. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/40Bb4dUmuZ\">pic.twitter.com\/40Bb4dUmuZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Film Updates (@FilmUpdates) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FilmUpdates\/status\/2061911270455230837?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 2, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt some point you understand what it is that the main character is really scared of. I thought, well, homophobia is a type of fear. I played around with that idea for a long time: how can I make a horror movie about homophobia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When coming up with the idea for the film, Adrian looked to older cult-classic horror movies for inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought, \u2018Maybe we\u2019ll do something like The Exorcist, but with a queer theme to it\u2019,\u201d he said. \u201cBut every variation I came up with just seemed to justify this belief that there was some sort of gay demon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I thought, \u2018What\u2019s the opposite of that?\u2019 Then I started to come up with this idea of \u2018what if there\u2019s a horror monster, but it takes the form of the person you\u2019re most attracted to?\u2019 Once I had that, I was able to dig into the other half of the film that I was really excited about, which was telling a love story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leviticus is out in US theatres on 19th June, but is still awaiting a UK release date.<\/p>\n<p><i>For all the latest film and TV
