{"id":4612,"date":"2026-05-29T14:32:52","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T13:32:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/?p=4612"},"modified":"2026-05-29T14:32:52","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T13:32:52","slug":"the-four-seasons-netflix-season-2-how-nick-died-why-returned-steve-carell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/05\/29\/the-four-seasons-netflix-season-2-how-nick-died-why-returned-steve-carell\/","title":{"rendered":"The Four Seasons cast reveal the real reason Nick&#8217;s in season two after shocking death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Warning: Spoilers ahead*<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right from the very start of The Four Seasons chapter two, Nick (Steve Carell) is gone but not forgotten, and that was very much an intentional decision, according to the cast and crew.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Created by Tina Fey, Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield, The Four Seasons surprised us when it first landed on <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a> last year, following a close-knit group of friends whose decades-long bond is tested by divorce and the messy realities of middle age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Nick ends his marriage to Anne (Kerri Kenney-Silver), he dives into a new relationship with the much younger Ginny (Erika Henningsen).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While much of the drama centred on this new dynamic, the end of the penultimate season one episode threw an absolute curveball by killing off Nick in a tragic car accident.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Four Seasons | Season 2 Official Trailer | Netflix\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bgpDgJkQka0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were ups and downs as the friendship group tried to deal with their grief &#8211; and tensions rose between Anne and Ginny &#8211; but they all came together in the end. And if that weren\u2019t enough, the finale revealed that Ginny was pregnant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This thread continues in season two, although the cast were a tad upset that Steve Carell couldn\u2019t reprise his role as Nick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, they found a way to include him in the throwback episode six, \u2018Little Thanksgiving\u2019, which travels back to the pandemic era when Nick is still alive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why Nick was brought back for The Four Seasons 2<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4621\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4621\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4621\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/13.jpg\" alt=\"Nick and Anne in The Four Seasons\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/13.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/13-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/13-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4621\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short answer: They missed Carell. As showrunner Lang Fisher told Netflix, \u201cWhen you lose someone, how the group as a whole changes is a big part of the storytelling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe missed Steve very much because we love him. So we did a flashback episode, because we wanted to see him again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-creator Tina Fey went on to admit that she had regrets over killing his character off. \u201cIt was so nice to find a way to have Steve back because he is an infinite delight and wonderful presence on set and onscreen,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLast year, I was like, \u2018Why am I killing him?\u2019 We always try to plant the seed that you can come back because Steve was also sad to leave.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe went into writing season 2 knowing we wanted to try to do it for at least one episode. God bless him, he was willing to do it as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a separate interview with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/tv\/2026\/05\/28\/steve-carell-returns-the-four-seasons-netflix-show-season-2-thanksgiving\/90195057007\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USA Today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Fey opened up about her talking with Carell while they were filming episodes three and four of the first chapter in Puerto Rico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was in the van with him in Puerto Rico last year, being like, \u2018Steve, we&#8217;re going to figure it out,\u2019\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anne star Kerri Kenney-Silver noted how her and Carell are \u201cfriends in real life,\u201d but she still missed having him on set for season two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe even had to start a separate group chat for this season, because at the end of the last group chat he just wrote, \u2018I&#8217;m dead,\u2019 with a sad face,\u201d she explained. \u201cBut that group chat is still very much alive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The flashback reveals Nick&#8217;s biggest secret<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4620\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4620\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4620\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/12.jpg\" alt=\"Nick and Anne in The Four Seasons\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/12.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/12-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/12-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4620\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick&#8217;s return isn&#8217;t just a nostalgic cameo, either. The flashback episode finally sheds more light on the cracks that were already forming in his marriage to Anne before his death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set during the pandemic, the episode sees Anne discover messages between Nick and another woman after using his phone while taking a Covid test.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What initially appears to be a single drunken mistake quickly unravels into something much more painful when Nick admits there had been another incident involving a woman he met at a golf tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We learn that Anne seriously considered leaving him years before their eventual separation. According to co-creator Tracey Wigfield, the storyline was designed to explore the idea that Anne could have walked away much earlier, but chose not to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for why, Kenney-Silver told USA Today that Anne initially stayed in the marriage for their teenage daughter, Lila (played in the flashback episode by <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/stranger-things\/\">Sadie Sink\u2019s<\/a> sister, Jacey Sink). \u201cHe&#8217;s a great father to her. He loves her,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut [Anne is] also just looking at this entire life that they&#8217;ve built together, this stone house that&#8217;s settled into the ground, with these warm lights, and the warm fire inside that they created, and this friend group that&#8217;s in there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis whole life, right? \u2018I can suck it up. I can suck it up and look past that for this.\u2019 I do not believe she ever had the intention to leave him ever. If he had not left her, she would have lived out the rest of her days in that sort of fantasy land of, &#8216;This is enough.&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>For all the latest film and TV updates
