Kane Parsons responds to bizarre &#8216;ghost directing&#8217; rumours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backrooms hasn\u2019t even hit cinemas yet, but the upcoming A24 horror film has already sparked a huge online debate surrounding its creator, Kane Parsons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 20-year-old filmmaker first launched his eerie <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/04\/02\/the-terrifying-original-story-of-backrooms-explained-as-film-trailer-is-released\/\">Backrooms web series<\/a> on YouTube when he was just 16 years old, transforming an already viral creepypasta into a fully fleshed out concept.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His horror sci-fi world is now getting the big screen treatment. Written by Will Soodik, the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell, but Parsons ultimately had full creative control to ensure his vision remained intact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s exactly why this new claim is all the more confusing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How the Backrooms drama started<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It started with a tweet, of course. News emerged earlier this week that <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/backrooms\/\">Backrooms<\/a> is eyeing a $40-$50million domestic debut after unprecedented pre-sales for A24.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Promising but we all know Kane Parsons absolutely didn\u2019t direct this movie. But the needle is moving in the right direction. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HLdTJPuAvE\">https:\/\/t.co\/HLdTJPuAvE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; The CinemaTologist (@TheTologist) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheTologist\/status\/2058962108625072309?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 25, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response, user The CinemaTologist, whose bio says they\u2019re a filmmaker, wrote, \u201cPromising but we all know Kane Parsons absolutely didn\u2019t direct this movie. But the needle is moving in the right direction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They quickly received backlash, and a community note has since been added to their response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKane Parsons is credited as director of A24&#8217;s Backrooms in his feature debut,\u201d it says. \u201cHe has been announced and reported as director since 2023 and has done press and interviews in that role.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CinemaTologist\u2019s comment isn\u2019t the only one of its kind, and seems to be in relation to established filmmakers James Wan, Shawn Levy and Osgood Perkins serving as producers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they are in a minority, and many fans have pointed to the fact that Kane himself created his Backrooms shorts at an even younger age. Now, the cast have weighed in to shut it down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Mark Duplass shuts down claims and says Kane was \u2018intensely prepared\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cast member Mark Duplass &#8211; who is a <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/horror\/\">horror<\/a> legend in his own right, having co-written and starred in the Creep movies &#8211; directly responded to The CinemaTologist\u2019s comment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hmmm, with all due respect I don&#39;t remember seeing you on set. What\u2019s more, Duplass took to Instagram with a longer video about the situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200a\u201dA lot of takes going around right now about whether Kane Parsons at the tender age of 19 actually directed the Backrooms or whether it was more ghost-directed by one of his more experienced producers,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was there. I suspect one of the reasons I was hired is because I mentor a lot of young filmmakers, and they may have thought it&#8217;d be good to have someone there who&#8217;s sensitive to that, and I was prepared to help out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Duplass revealed that, in fact, Kane didn\u2019t need any help whatsoever. \u201cHe was intensely prepared,\u201d he continued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe spent the last five years of his life building out one of the most detailed mythologies I&#8217;ve ever been a part of, worked incredibly closely with his crew &#8211; They don\u2019t tell you this, but 96% of all movies released in North America and Europe are actually directed by the same person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey call him \u2018The Older Gentleman.\u2019 He has had all of Hollywood in a chokehold for decades now. They make you sign over all of your intellectual property, life rights, and genetic information to him when you enter the industry. He loves movies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fans are playing along, with one writing, \u201cCan you cancel the release of your Backrooms movie and have The Older Gentleman make an action film for Slop Guys starring Dwayne \u2018The Rock\u2019 Johnson as relatable protagonist jellybean man instead? And the film is pretty much an extension of that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Backrooms | Official Trailer HD\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wek9dIw2uVM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kane said that once the project expanded into a full-scale Hollywood production, there were moments where he worried about preserving the series\u2019 unique identity and sense of authorship, but he was able to overcome this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere&#8217;s the human component beyond myself,\u201d he added. \u201cThere&#8217;s a huge risk of losing that sense of authorship\u2026 I was very much precious about that information and trying to preserve that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s very hard to have a script from someone who&#8217;s not been living with this for a few years,\u201d he added. \u201cThe script is probably the single point of contact that is the most critical.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the challenges, Parsons said the process remained collaborative and constantly evolving, with the screenplay repeatedly refined to ensure it matched the standards set by his original videos.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Obsession\u2019s Curry Barker has faced similar \u2018ghost directing\u2019 rumours<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oddly enough, these \u201cghost directing\u201d claims have also hit Curry Barker following the huge success of his horror film <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/05\/21\/obsession-cast-reveal-extreme-lengths-to-make-car-scene-sarah-horror\/\">Obsession<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I read somewhere that Blumhouse got this young kid to act as kind of a &quot;face&quot; for the film while a more experienced director was behind the scenes actually putting the work in.<\/p>\n<p>You ever hear of Milli Vanilli? You ever hear of Milli Vanilli? Sort of like that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milli Vanilli was a pop duo who were the subject of a huge music controversy when it was discovered that its members, Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus, didn\u2019t sing the tracks on their hit albums.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the Curry claim, there is no source for this or any evidence to back it up.
