The new Netflix series leaves a number of questions in its wake, the biggest being why the hell Sam (Alfred Molina) glitches at the end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, The Boroughs has been described by some as \u201cgeriatric <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/stranger-things\/\">Stranger Things<\/a>\u201d &#8211; it deals with monsters, vintage tech, and is even produced by the Duffer brothers &#8211; but it\u2019s so much more than that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The series follows Sam, who is resentfully moved to the titular retirement community out in the desert after his wife (played by Malcolm in the Middle\u2019s Jane Kaczmarek) tragically dies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he witnesses his neighbour Jack (Bill Pullman) being killed by a fluid-drinking monster, Sam and his new pals &#8211; Renee (Geena Davis), Judy (Alfre Woodard), Art (Clarke Peters), and Wally (Denis O\u2019Hare) &#8211; band together to uncover a far darker conspiracy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Boroughs | Official Trailer | Netflix\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PsvUvqXoTpE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the monsters initially seem like the antagonists, the real villains are Blaine and Anneliese, the seemingly young couple who run the retirement compound. As it turns out, they\u2019re way older than all of the residents there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019ve secretly spent decades exploiting a mysterious entity known as Mother, using her blood to keep themselves and their inner circle forever young.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hidden beneath the Boroughs is a vast tunnel system where Mother\u2019s terrifying \u201cchildren\u201d (the monsters) are sent to harvest brain fluid from sleeping residents, which is then fed back to her to keep her alive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blaine and the others consume Mother\u2019s blood &#8211; that strange golden liquid repeatedly referenced throughout the series &#8211; which effectively freezes them in time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4424\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4424\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4424\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/3.jpg\" alt=\"Anneliese and Blaine in The Boroughs\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/3-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/3-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4424\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as Sam and his pals uncover, after years of having her body used as a never-ending blood factory, Mother is exhausted and dying.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s able to communicate with certain residents &#8211; including Sam &#8211; by sending out signals. She uses this method to tell him that she wants to die peacefully for the suffering to end, requesting to be taken to the cave where Blaine and Anneliese first found her in 1949.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Blaine tracks them down, chaos erupts inside the cave. Sam and Blaine fight, giving Mother time for her children to gather around her. Under their protection, she explodes, emitting a huge beam of light and seemingly killing Blaine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scene then cuts to the final sequence, showing Sam, his daughter Claire (Jena Malone), Renee, Judy, Art, and Wally enjoying a nice meal together, as one big happy family. Here\u2019s the thing: It\u2019s a very happy ending, but it almost seems a little too perfect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This becomes clear when Sam goes to dress his head wound in the bathroom. Instead, it\u2019s been speculated that Sam is actually in a coma following the explosion inside the cave, with Mother keeping his consciousness alive inside a made-up reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, there are plenty of theories that Sam inherited Mother\u2019s powers. But as was highlighted by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dmtalkies.com\/the-boroughs-season-1-why-did-sam-glitch-2026\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DMT\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Shikhar Agrawal, if that were the case, \u201cit would have been his physical body that glitched, and not his reflection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4426\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4426\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4426\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/5-1.jpg\" alt=\"Art and Judy in The Boroughs\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/5-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/5-1-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/5-1-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout The Boroughs, Mother is shown creating mental projections and communicating through memories and loved ones, so it wouldn\u2019t be completely left field for her to construct a comforting scenario inside Sam\u2019s mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agrawal\u2019s theory goes that Sam\u2019s in a coma, Mother\u2019s still alive somewhere &#8211; perhaps inside Sam\u2019s head &#8211; and she\u2019s trying to keep his consciousness alive. This would not only explain the glitch but also the fact that the final blast killed Blaine but only left Sam with a tiny scratch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s also the question of the mysterious peach tree hidden deep within the cave. The show repeatedly hints that the tree is connected to Mother in some way, but it never gives us the full story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, the creators have already confirmed there\u2019s much more to the tree than we currently know, which we\u2019ll find out if The Boroughs is renewed for season two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-creator Will Matthews revealed that they originally planned to show exactly where the tree came from in the first chapter. \u201cWe ultimately decided to hold that answer [for future seasons] of what the tree is and why the tree is where it is because it\u2019s all connected,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given this is where Mother explodes, and we\u2019re missing exactly what happened after that &#8211; as the scene then cuts to the final reunion &#8211; surely there\u2019s far more to this story than meets the eye.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also want to highlight that final scene. It\u2019s lovely, don\u2019t get me wrong, but it\u2019s bordering on eerie how perfect everything is. But if Mother is dead, how is he still alive and planning a trip away with Renee and Paz (Carlos Miranda)? It all just seems like one big illusion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, until we get confirmation of a follow up chapter, all of these questions are up in the air. But between Sam\u2019s reflection glitching, that mysterious peach tree, and that \u2018too good to be true\u2019 finale, it becomes harder to believe that Sam really got the happy ending he thinks he
