{"id":4400,"date":"2026-05-26T13:56:38","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T12:56:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/?p=4400"},"modified":"2026-05-26T13:56:38","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T12:56:38","slug":"matt-rife-tells-people-to-shut-up-shane-gillis-tony-hinchcliffe-kevin-hart-roast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/05\/26\/matt-rife-tells-people-to-shut-up-shane-gillis-tony-hinchcliffe-kevin-hart-roast\/","title":{"rendered":"Matt Rife tells people to \u2018shut up\u2019 over the Shane Gillis and Tony Hinchcliffe roast drama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been more than two weeks since The Roast of Kevin Hart aired on <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>, but the controversy continues to make headlines, with Matt Rife now chiming in on the conversation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three-hour comedy special, which premiered on Sunday, May 10th, saw a group of celebrities and comedians taking to the stage to fire shots at both Hart and each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s edition sparked controversy, particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/05\/12\/george-floyd-family-slams-tony-hinchcliffe-for-joke-at-kevin-hart-roast\/\">Tony Hinchcliffe\u2019s comment about George Floyd<\/a>. \u201cThe Black community is so proud of you,\u201d the Kill Tony host said. \u201cRight now George Floyd is looking up at us all laughing so hard he can\u2019t breathe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Floyd\u2019s family slammed the joke, as did civil rights activists who <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/05\/15\/george-floyd-family-activists-condemn-tony-hinchcliffe-joke-roast-of-kevin-hart-netflix\/\">held a press conference<\/a> and demanded accountability. Shane Gillis also made a racially charged joke when he said Hart is so short, \u201cthey\u2019re gonna have to lynch him from a bonsai tree.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/05\/11\/what-chelsea-handler-said-about-jeffrey-epstein-dinner-kevin-hart-shane-gilllis-roast\/\">Chelsea Handler<\/a>, another comedian featured at the event, slammed Gillis and Hinchcliffe on last week\u2019s episode of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mB_IMMzDL7M\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deon Cole\u2019s Funny Knowing You<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> podcast, accusing the pair of being \u201cracist\u201d and \u201csexist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/05\/22\/shane-gillis-fires-back-at-chelsea-handler-for-claiming-racist-jokes-kevin-hart-roast\/\">Gillis fired back<\/a> through his representative, who shared the following statement with Film Shrine, \u201cThis is a big moment for Chelsea. I am glad she\u2019s capitalising. Good for her. We\u2019re all rooting for her. Anyway come see me July 17th at the football stadium in Philly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Matt Rife shuts down the Kevin Hart Roast controversy<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fellow standup comedian Matt Rife shared his thoughts about the situation at the 2026 American Music Awards last night, with the Variety interviewer highlighting the backlash to certain jokes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Matt Rife tells people complaining about the Kevin Hart roast to \u201cshut up\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s supposed to be mean-spirited, but you don\u2019t actually mean it. Shut <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Then don\u2019t watch it. It\u2019s a roast. Everybody there is going to be made fun of. It\u2019s supposed to push the boundaries of all forms of comedy for a roast.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s supposed to be mean-spirited, but you don\u2019t actually mean it,\u201d he added. \u201cEveryone there loves each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to this, Rife praised everyone involved in <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/05\/11\/real-reason-pete-davidson-called-tony-hinchcliffe-nazi-during-kevin-hart-roast-netflix\/\">The Roast of Kevin Hart<\/a>, saying, \u201cI did not get a chance to see the whole thing, but my feed is obviously filled with clips from it. I think everybody on there crushed it, dude. Clay Aiken vibes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A third joked, \u201cB*tch I thought this was a drag race queen out of drag.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Nikki Glaser reveals why she really thinks people are angry about the jokes<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rife isn\u2019t the only one talking about the event, as comedian Nikki Glaser has said she\u2019s relieved she sat this one out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nikki Glaser Relieved She Sat Out Kevin Hart Roast After Hearing Controversial Jokes (Exclusive)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dyQzC3AdR9o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although she\u2019s a regular at celebrity roasts and was offered a spot at the latest Netflix special, Glaser revealed back in March that she\u2019d turned it down due to her busy schedule and the fact that she\u2019s already roasted Hart multiple times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As she told Variety at the time, \u201cI\u2019m coming up short with short jokes if you know what I\u2019m saying.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a new chat with Entertainment Tonight, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glaser said she\u2019s glad she was watching it rather than participating. The problem is not that it&#8217;s racist. It&#8217;s that if you really want to do a joke, you\u2019ve got to find a way to make it make sense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can&#8217;t just say it out of nowhere\u2026 I think that\u2019s what people are having a problem with is not the nature of the jokes, because I do love roasts and how anything can be said and all bets are off, but that&#8217;s not so easy.
