As the firstborn of Beyonc\u00e9 and Jay-Z, Blue Ivy Carter is celebrity royalty. But her fame isn\u2019t technically the reason she was able to attend the 2026 Met Gala last night despite not meeting the strict age policy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The event, which took place on Monday 4th May, is the most prestigious in fashion, with Vogue editor Anna Wintour carefully vetting the guest list. As such, there are multiple rules to take into consideration<\/a> (not that they\u2019re always followed).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Phones aren\u2019t allowed, for instance, although already we\u2019ve seen bathroom selfies emerge online. There\u2019s also the dress code – this year, the theme was \u201cCostume Art\u201d, representing fashion as an art form.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another rule is that guests must be at least 18 years old to attend. But Blue Ivy – who made her feature film debut in 2024\u2019s Mufasa: The Lion King<\/a> – was born in January 2012, making her 14.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How did Blue Ivy Carter get into the 2026 Met Gala?<\/h2>\n

Thankfully for her, there is a loophole to the age restriction: underage attendees can get in if they\u2019re accompanied by their parents. Since Beyonc\u00e9 and Jay-Z were right there on the red carpet with her, Blue Ivy was allowed in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to <\/span>The Hollywood Reporter<\/span><\/a>, the age policy only came into effect in 2018, as revealed by Maddie Ziegler, who was 15 at that time. \u201cI can\u2019t go, because I\u2019m not old enough,\u201d she told the outlet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the exact reasoning behind the restriction has never been formally confirmed, there has been plenty of speculation over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the policy was first introduced in 2018, some suggested it may have been linked to that year\u2019s \u201cHeavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination\u201d theme, with rumours of guidelines influenced by the Catholic Church.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Others believed it was more of a practical response to controversy at the 2017 edition, after several high-profile attendees were criticised for smoking in the museum\u2019s bathrooms (although most of those involved were over the age of 18).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But it\u2019s widely understood to be simply part of a broader effort to maintain the Met Gala\u2019s image as a more formal, tightly controlled event.<\/span><\/p>\n
