{"id":2720,"date":"2026-04-28T15:45:19","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T15:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/staging-filmshrine\/?p=2720"},"modified":"2026-04-28T16:50:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T16:50:00","slug":"colman-domingo-explains-why-michael-jackson-film-skips-allegations-but-a-key-detail-is-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/04\/28\/colman-domingo-explains-why-michael-jackson-film-skips-allegations-but-a-key-detail-is-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Colman Domingo explains why Michael Jackson film skips allegations, but a key detail is off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colman Domingo and Nia Long have opened up about why the Michael Jackson biopic doesn\u2019t portray the sexual molestation allegations against the singer, and while their explanation makes sense, one detail about the timeline has come into question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Domingo and Long play MJ\u2019s father and mother, Joseph and Katherine Scruse-Jackson, in the film &#8211; simply titled Michael &#8211; which centres on his early days in the Jackson 5 to his transformation into the King of Pop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One subject the biopic doesn\u2019t delve into, however, is the issue surrounding the various child sexual abuse allegations that have been filed against Michael over the years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision has been criticised in many reviews, with the film earning a Rotten Tomatoes score of 37%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=59jEWDncv28\">Today<\/a>, the actors were asked about what they would say to critics accusing the film of whitewashing, and the answer they give is simple: the timeline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Domingo said: \u201cThe film takes place from the \u201860s to 1988, so it does not go into the first allegations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Why the Michael Jackson biopic doesn\u2019t cover the allegations<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Colman Domingo, Nia Long on Why &#039;Michael&#039; Biopic Ends at 1988\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/59jEWDncv28?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the comment that\u2019s come into question is what he said next: that the first allegations were in \u201c2005\u201d. The truth is that they arrived years earlier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1993, Michael Jackson was famously accused by dentist and screenwriter Evan Chandler of sexually abusing his 13-year-old son, Jordan Chandler.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LAPD launched an investigation into the claims but found no evidence, and later that year, the Chandlers filed a $30million lawsuit against the singer. Michael chose to settle the case out of court, reportedly paying around $22million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been multiple allegations since then, including a renewed police investigation in 2003, two years before Domingo claimed they began.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People have pointed to this online, with one writing on X, \u201cFirst allegations in 2005??? He didn\u2019t do his research at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe first allegations were in 1993, and that is what tarnished MJ\u2019s image. It was never the same after 1993. True or not, his career took a huge hit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others aren\u2019t so against the film\u2019s decision to omit the allegations, however, including this person who said, \u201cMaybe because the movie ends in 1988 and the accusations began in 1993.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another commented, \u201cWhy would it? were later detailed in the 2019 HBO documentary Leaving Neverland, which reignited global scrutiny of Jackson\u2019s legacy, though his estate has strongly denied the allegations and challenged the claims in court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The legal cases tied to these later accusations have been subject to ongoing appeals and rulings, with no criminal convictions ever made against Jackson during his lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for whether these cases could ever be explored in a biopic, Colman said in the Today interview, \u201cThere\u2019s a possibility of there being a part two that may deal with other things that may happen afterwards.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the interviewer
