Can you believe it\u2019s been 20 years since Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) landed her not-so-dream job at Runway? A <\/span>lot<\/span><\/i> has changed since 2006, including the cost of living.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even back then, Andy\u2019s lifestyle didn\u2019t quite match her paycheque, but in 2026 the difference is glaring. With The Devil Wears Prada 2<\/a> on the way, here\u2019s how her salary stacks up against the lifestyle she was somehow living.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In The Devil Wears Prada book, Andy was paid $32,000 (\u00a324,000) before taxes, whereas a recent ad for a similar position at Vogue publisher Cond\u00e9 Nast was offering between $60,000 (\u00a344,500) and $80,000 (\u00a359,000).<\/span><\/p>\n

Working as a junior assistant at Runway is the job \u201ca million girls would kill for\u201d, but that had little to do with the pay. Now, both figures are not to be sniffed at, but living the lifestyle Andy was in New York City is near damn impossible. Especially after rent\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Rent \u2013\u00a0$2,850 (2006) to $7,825 (2026)<\/h3>\n

According to the <\/span>New York Times<\/span><\/a>, the average one bedroom flat in a non-doorman building in Soho – where Andy lived with her boyfriend Nate (Adrian Grenier)<\/a> – would set you back a whopping $2850 (\u00a32110).<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, bear in mind that she would have split this with Nate, but that\u2019s still a huge chunk of her wages. But it\u2019s nothing compared to what she\u2019d be paying today if she were in the same role now: $7,825 (\u00a35,800), as per <\/span>RentHop<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even halved, that\u2019s basically her entire paycheque gone before she\u2019s even bought a single latte for Miranda (Meryl Streep).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who can forget the moment Andy had Emily\u2019s (Emily Blunt) jaw on the floor with <\/span>the<\/span><\/i> Chanel thigh-high boots from the 2005 fall\/winter collection. <\/span>The Cut<\/span><\/a> did some digging and found out that they had a price tag of $1,500 (\u00a31,110) 20 years ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, well, you\u2019d be hard pressed to actually find a pair. But the outlet did find a recently sold listing for just over $4,150 (\u00a33,070). This one\u2019s just for comparison\u2019s sake, however, as we all know Nigel (Stanley Tucci) raided them from the Runway closet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the topic of the 2005 fall\/winter collection, another little number that made an appearance in Andy\u2019s glow-up scene was the green Fendi knit chef bag.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A disgruntled <\/span>blogger<\/span><\/a> revealed that it originally cost $930 (\u00a3690), a hefty chunk for what, as they put it, anyone\u2019s grandmother could make in an evening. But in today\u2019s market, well, a recent listing on Sororit\u00e9 has it down for $3,250 (\u00a32,400). Yeah, I\u2019ll stick with my grandma\u2019s, thanks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Again, this one\u2019s more of a fun entry because we all know Andy didn\u2019t pay for the bag herself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Big ticket designer items might not affect Andy\u2019s bank account, but her New Yorker breakfast of a cream cheese bagel certainly will – especially if she\u2019s eating these every morning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s some guesswork to the $2 figure, as the <\/span>cost<\/span><\/a> of a cream cheese bagel at Murray\u2019s was $2.75 in 2014, so we rounded down according to inflation. But these days you\u2019re looking at $6.50, depending on where you\u2019re buying from.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After Andy\u2019s rent? It\u2019d have to be a \u2018bagels at home\u2019 situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Latest phone \u2013 $475 (2006) to $1,099 (2026)<\/h3>\n

Of course, you can\u2019t be booking impossible flights in the middle of a Broadway show without the latest phone model, which at the time was the T-Mobile Sidekick – retailing at $475 (\u00a3350).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But that\u2019s pennies compared to the modern equivalent – the iPhone 17 Pro – which starts at $1,099 (\u00a3815) in the US. That one would definitely have to be on credit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Miranda’s Starbucks order \u2013\u00a0$3 (2006) to $6.50 (2026)<\/h3>\n

Last but definitely not least, who can forget Miranda’s signature Starbucks order: a tall, no-foam, extra-shot, extra-hot nonfat latte. The Cut revealed that this would set you back $3 two decades ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But if Miranda\u2019s still ordering the same drink in The Devil Wears Prada 2<\/a>, Andy might want to grab the company card, as it\u2019s more than doubled in price to $6.50. Inflation\u2019s a bitch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
