Film Shrine spoke to doctors who say the show\u2019s accuracy reflects a very big, very real problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Dr. Langon says in the first chapter of <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/2026\/04\/02\/where-tf-is-the-pitt-season-two-hbo-maxs-uk-release-is-clapped-so-here-are-the-deets\">HBO Max\u2019s<\/a> medical drama, \u201cThis is a tough place for sensitive people, but we need them badly.\u201d But no matter what your temperament, working in a high-pressure emergency room takes its toll.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily Mendez, a former ER psychiatric clinician, told us the series \u201caccurately captures the emotional undercurrent\u201d that comes with the continuous state of urgency in environments like the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile a TV show can\u2019t fully recreate the experience, the themes of high-stakes decisions and emotional overwhelm are all too real,\u201d Mendez explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2585\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2585\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2585\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-pitt-mental-health.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Mohan in The Pitt\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-pitt-mental-health.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-pitt-mental-health-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-pitt-mental-health-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2585\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: HBO Max<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy experience working in the ER is that it was fast-paced and intense. You are assessing severe crisis citations, back-to-back, for hours at a time. There is an urgency that goes along with that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During her time at the ER, she would sometimes spend entire shifts on her feet, where it wasn\u2019t uncommon for her to forget to drink water or eat meals. But there was also an \u201cunspoken pressure\u201d to keep on going and remain calm even when there\u2019s no gas left in the tank.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only does this impact staff\u2019s physical health but their mental health too. \u201cIt can be emotionally heavy, and you have little time to process this before taking care of the next patient,\u201d Mendez continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat explains why many ER workers experience high levels of burnout. It\u2019s simply emotionally and physically exhausting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne thing I think is especially important is the toll that this takes over time,\u201d Mendez added. \u201cThe pressure can slowly wear down even the most resilient clients over time, as I think was portrayed accurately in episode 14.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2582\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2582\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2582\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-pitt-mental-health-.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Al-Hashimi in The Pitt\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-pitt-mental-health-.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-pitt-mental-health--1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-pitt-mental-health--768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: HBO Max<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like it is for Dr. Robby and co, in real life it\u2019s not the extreme cases, but the repetition and lack of recovery time that breaks healthcare workers down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From an outsider\u2019s perspective, therapist Lauren Chase told Film Shrine that burnout, anxiety and emotional exhaustion are some of the most common themes she sees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI regularly work with clients in healthcare who look capable and composed on the outside but feel overwhelmed, depleted and stretched too thin internally,\u201d she explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chase praised The Pitt for how it captures the intensity of these roles, but said it misses the more chronic, quieter side of burnout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not always dramatic,\u201d Chase continued. \u201cMore often, it looks like emotional numbness, increased anxiety, difficulty turning work off, and a growing sense of disconnection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2584\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2584\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2584\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-pitt-mental-health-2.jpeg\" alt=\"Louie and Dr Langdon talking in The Pitt\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-pitt-mental-health-2.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-pitt-mental-health-2-1024x538.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-pitt-mental-health-2-768x403.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2584\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: HBO Max<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another theme The Pitt handles with care, so to speak, is addiction. Characters like Louie and Dr Langdon highlight both sides of it, but there are multiple moments in the show that don\u2019t shy away from shining a light on the issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addiction specialist Dr Joseph Volpicelli said The Pitt\u2019s depiction of patients like Louie &#8211; who repeatedly returns to the ER with alcohol-related complications &#8211; is \u201crealistic\u201d, but also illustrates a frustrating reality within healthcare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt often takes a crisis for people to get into treatment,\u201d he explained, noting that many cases aren\u2019t addressed until something goes seriously wrong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t wait for someone to have a stroke before we treat high blood pressure,\u201d he added, but with addiction, it\u2019s often left until it reaches that point.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussing the journey of Louie, who tragically dies in season two, Dr Volpicelli said he felt \u201cfrustrated\u201d as it \u201cmissed an opportunity to help teach the general public about some good, effective treatment options.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut I also have to point out that it&#8217;s probably an accurate portrayal,\u201d he added. Ultimately, Dr Volpicelli argued, the issue isn\u2019t the show\u2019s portrayal but the system it reflects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, <\/i><i><span
