It\u2019s yet another blow to the fandom, but there\u2019s one factor that\u2019s hard to ignore when it comes to the book\u2019s delay and it has everything to do with Game of Thrones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rumour surfaced in a tweet that claimed the penultimate entry to <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/2024\/08\/19\/george-rr-martin-reveals-major-regrets-about-game-of-thrones-books\">Martin\u2019s A Song of Ice and Fire saga<\/a> &#8211; which forms the basis of HBO\u2019s Game of Thrones series &#8211; was finished and set to release soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though fans wanted to believe it\u2019s true, they knew it was fake news. And so it came as no surprise when the US publisher, Bantam Books, came out and told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/the-winds-of-winter-release-leak-false-george-r-r-martin-publisher-says-11948711\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EW<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThe online chatter you are seeing regarding a supposed leak is false.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Apparently TWOW will be announced soon! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ILgZyDr2xv\">pic.twitter.com\/ILgZyDr2xv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ned Stark (@FantasyWorldW1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FantasyWorldW1\/status\/2043163844466692322?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 12, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The jokes soon started rolling in. \u201cOnly George RR Martin would announce he is, in fact, not working on The Winds of Winter,\u201d said one on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/freefolk\/comments\/1skl8km\/george_rr_martins_publisher_issues_statement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reddit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while another wrote, \u201cBest comment I saw was something like \u2018Martin speaks out to debunk allegations of productivity\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it sad? Yes, but it\u2019s not surprising. The last published entry in A Song of Ice and Fire is A Dance with Dragons\u2026 which dropped in 2011. Since then there\u2019s been 15 years of tortuous waiting, with plenty of false hope along the way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In more recent years, Martin has been vocal about his struggles to finish the saga, even telling <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/9WxPeoi1Gz4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that The Winds of Winter is \u201cthe curse of my life\u201d. It\u2019s one of the reasons frustration grows every time the fantasy author announces new projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/2024\/09\/02\/brutal-game-of-thrones-and-house-of-the-dragon-digs-prove-george-martin-hates-both-shows\">TV universe<\/a> is expanding, with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms dropping in January, House of the Dragon season three coming up and an Aegon&#8217;s Conquest movie in the works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But while it\u2019s easy to blame the delay on Martin\u2019s ever-expanding list of projects, that explanation is a little too simple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2565\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2565\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2565\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/winds-of-winter-1.jpg\" alt=\"George R.R. And that pressure has skyrocketed in the years since Game of Thrones came to an end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much like the initial Ice and Fire novels, Game of Thrones\u2019 early seasons had it all: critically acclaimed, huge ratings, and Martin\u2019s rich world to draw from. But then the show moved past its source material, culminating in Season 8, aka the most divisive chapter of TV in recent history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Years of build-up led to an ending that, for many, simply didn\u2019t land. The author hinted about this pressure in a 2017 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/grrm.livejournal.com\/536859.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discussing his Dunk and Egg novellas. \u201cI don&#8217;t want to repeat what happened with Game of Thrones itself, where the show gets ahead of the books,\u201d he wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s repeatedly said that the ending of his novels will not mirror the controversial ending created by the show, but maybe that\u2019s one of the biggest causes of his writer\u2019s block.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2564\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2564\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2564\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/winds-of-winter.jpeg\" alt=\"Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/winds-of-winter.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/winds-of-winter-1024x538.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/04\/winds-of-winter-768x403.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2564\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: HBO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine being responsible for not only finalising a story but making it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">better<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; with the whole world watching. It\u2019s rare enough for an author to be working on a long-delayed final act, but rarer still for a version of it to already exist and to have been so widely criticised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other theories have surfaced that perhaps Martin is struggling to put pen to paper because the TV show finished exactly how he intended it to &#8211; and everyone hated it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, the quality of the writing might deteriorate as things go on, due to not having the source material, but I firmly believe the show ends with exactly the same story points that would&#8217;ve ended up in the books,\u201d wrote one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/LowStakesConspiracies\/comments\/1s6ue2b\/the_reason_george_r_r_martin_hasnt_completed_his\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redditor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd Martin has seen the reaction to them and now can&#8217;t be arsed to finish writing any of it. Especially since it might mean changing his plot to try and make it more palatable for people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever the case, the real reason The Winds of Winter is taking so long might be something we don\u2019t want to admit &#8211; because it means the problem isn\u2019t just Martin, but the impossible expectations surrounding
