The towering infected Alpha made a strong impression in Danny Boyle\u2019s film, but it wasn\u2019t just his power or presence that sent Twitter into overdrive. One very specific design choice became a viral talking point almost overnight: His giant zombie dong.<\/p>\n<p>Now, with 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, Samson is back, but not quite the same.<\/p>\n<h2>So, why did they cover up the hung zombie in The Bone Temple?<\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">They made him cover it up because of woke <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iXsAuzlen3\">https:\/\/t.co\/iXsAuzlen3<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Rbu8gOFfWS\">pic.twitter.com\/Rbu8gOFfWS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; bailey (@baileylikemovie) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/baileylikemovie\/status\/1962869698837479758?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 2, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Although 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple were shot back-to-back, DaCosta was clear from her first conversations with the producers that she wasn\u2019t interested in imitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first thing I said was, I am not going to make a Danny Boyle movie,\u201d she told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denofgeek.com\/movies\/28-years-later-the-bone-temple-nia-dacosta-exclusive-secrets\/\">Den of Geek<\/a>. \u201cNo one else can. I want to make this movie the way I see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That mindset extended directly to Samson. While Boyle introduced the Alpha, DaCosta needed the character to serve a different purpose in her film. \u201cIn terms of designing Samson the character, there were some things I had to change from his movie to my movie,\u201d she explains. \u201cIn part because\u2026 certain things that worked in Danny\u2019s film would not look right in mine. We\u2019re doing things differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And yes, one of those \u201cthings\u201d is the detail of Samson, aka the Alpha zombie\u2019s huge dong. DaCosta is fully aware of the reaction it caused. \u201cP*nises bring people together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, in The Bone Temple, Samson is no longer just a moment designed to shock and disappear. He\u2019s a character with real narrative weight, so his design needed to match the tone DaCosta was building.<\/p>\n<h2>Samson and Kelson are huge parts of the new film<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_567908\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-567908\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1986 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/01\/28-Years-Later-The-Bone-Temple.webp\" alt=\"Alpha hung zombie covered 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple\" width=\"1200\" height=\"676\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-567908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">via Sony Pictures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unlike the first film, The Bone Temple places Samson in close orbit around Ralph Fiennes\u2019 Dr. Kelson, the isolated figure living among the skulls of the Bone Temple itself. <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/2025\/09\/03\/the-bone-temple-director-reveals-hung-zombie-and-dr-kelson-are-a-big-part-of-the-film\">Their relationship is central to the sequel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first movie, maybe, says a lot about his solitude in our film,\u201d DaCosta said about Kelson. \u201cIn my film, at the Bone Temple, we get to characterise that as loneliness, and we get to see more of how this man survives on his own, how it feels, and why that might push him to do really risky things like engaging with an Alpha in the way that we see him engage with Samson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because Samson\u2019s story is now so closely tied to Kelson\u2019s, his presence had to shift. He could no longer work purely as an unsettling visual idea. He needed to exist within the emotional logic of the film.<\/p>\n<h2>So how did Danny Boyle feel about the changes?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_567906\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-567906\" style=\"width: 2000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1989 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/01\/the-bone-temple.jpg\" alt=\"Alpha hung zombie covered 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1332\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-567906\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">via Sony Pictures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite making changes, DaCosta worked closely with Boyle to make sure everything still lined up. \u201cIt was really important to me that I inherited a character who had the right starting point,\u201d she said. \u201c[Boyle] really listened when I had thoughts or feelings about how those decisions would impact my movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boyle, she added, was keen not to undermine the sequel. \u201cBecause he also loves the second film and loves what it was doing, he didn\u2019t want to do anything that would hinder that at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bone Temple also visually separates its worlds. Kelson\u2019s environment is calm, sunlit, and unsettling in its stillness. That atmosphere carries over into Samson\u2019s presence, too, which needed more restraint, especially where Boyle\u2019s film leaned into provocation. Some design elements simply \u201cwould not look right\u201d in DaCosta\u2019s world.<\/p>\n<p>The result is an Alpha who\u2019s still dangerous and unsettling, but whose impact now comes from context
