If you went into Netflix\u2019s People We Meet on Vacation expecting the same level of spice as Emily Henry\u2019s book, but noticed things were toned down, the author has now revealed the real reason why the sex scenes were changed.<\/p>\n

The film stars Emily Bader and Tom Blyth<\/a> as Poppy and Alex, best friends who slowly realise they\u2019re in love after years of travelling together. And while the movie keeps the heart of the story, the intimate moment between them is far more subtle than many readers expected.<\/p>\n

So, why did they change the sex scene in the movie?<\/h2>\n

Speaking to Variety<\/a>, Emily Henry revealed the decision wasn\u2019t about being shy or playing it safe, in fact, the scene was originally filmed much closer to the book.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo here\u2019s what I\u2019ll say. I saw the scene as he shot it, and it was gorgeous and perfect,\u201d she said. \u201cI mean, I feel a little bit guilty because I went and told all of my friends, \u2018It\u2019s one of the sexiest sex scenes I\u2019ve ever seen in my life.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She even compared it to a famous movie moment, adding, \u201cLike, genuinely it was like \u2018Titanic\u2019 level to me. It was so, so good and raw and tender.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, after early test screenings, it became clear the moment wasn\u2019t landing the same way for everyone. \u201cThey had started doing test screenings and people who, especially people who weren\u2019t familiar with the books, felt kind of like it was a hard right turn in the movie,\u201d Henry explained.<\/p>\n

Because of that, director Brett Haley went back to her to talk it through. \u201cHe first brought that to me and asked, how important is seeing the sex scene to you and to your readers?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

While the scene mattered to her, Henry ultimately felt the film had to come first. \u201cMy opinion would be that if it doesn\u2019t fit in the movie, then it doesn\u2019t work,\u201d she said. \u201cIt has to serve the larger movie. I don\u2019t want anyone to feel like they were jolted out of the story, and feel like they hopped rails into a different movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

How did the film\u2019s tone and timeline affect the decision?<\/h2>\n

Another key reason was the way the movie shows Poppy and Alex growing up over time. \u201cI think part of it is that we start with Tom and Emily in college, and they feel very young in those scenes,\u201d Henry said. \u201cYou look at them in a different way, and you get to watch them grow up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because the audience has followed them from such a young age, the tone had to stay softer. \u201cYou\u2019ve been with them since they were just-barely-not children,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Director Brett Haley also said the explicit version simply didn\u2019t suit the kind of rom-com he wanted to make. \u201cWe shot a scene that was literally, exactly what\u2019s in the book, and readers know what that means,\u201d he told Variety. \u201cIt, frankly, just didn\u2019t gel with the film. It just didn\u2019t tonally work.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cYou have your classics, like \u2018When Harry Met Sally\u2019 and \u2018Notting Hill,\u2019 where there\u2019s very little sex there. The level of spiciness does not fit this tone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Could we ever see the original, spicier version?<\/h2>\n

Interestingly, the author hasn\u2019t ruled it out completely.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Brett and I have also talked about, I wonder if someday there could be a director\u2019s cut where people can see this scene? Because it is really so beautiful, like, they all just outdid themselves. It feels so tender and real, but very, very sexy and romantic, and it just didn\u2019t fit in the movie. And that\u2019s what they say, kill your darlings. Like, if it doesn\u2019t work in the larger project, it doesn\u2019t really matter how good it is on its own,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
