But this time, the drama isn&#8217;t just about the plot, but about where the plot actually came from. His upcoming FX series The Beauty is basically a TV remake of <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/tag\/the-substance\">The Substance<\/a>, whether he likes it or not.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_566227\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-566227\" style=\"width: 961px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1977 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-08-at-17.17.48-e1767892704108.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"961\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-566227\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FX<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-start=\"404\" data-end=\"830\">The TV adaptation of The Beauty was first announced back in September 2024, but the discourse didn\u2019t really kick off until Murphy began teasing the show more heavily over the past year. Things reached peak hype when Murphy and the cast, including Evan Peters, Bella Hadid, and Ashton Kutcher (yikes) revealed new details to a packed main stage at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Wj95csipTH4\">New York Comic-Con<\/a> in October.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"832\" data-end=\"948\">Then came an official release date, art, and a teaser trailer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"950\" data-end=\"1306\">As soon as the trailer dropped, people started clocking what they saw as very familiar themes, namely, eerie beauty transformations, body horror visuals, and a sinister \u201cmiracle drug\u201d promising physical perfection. Naturally, comparisons to Coralie Fargeat\u2019s Oscar-nominated 2024 body-horror film <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/2024\/10\/16\/the-full-plot-of-the-substance-explained-if-youre-too-scared-to-actually-watch-the-film\">The Substance<\/a> came flooding in.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_566228\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-566228\" style=\"width: 1158px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1978\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-08-at-16.48.25.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1158\" height=\"516\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-566228\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FX<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-start=\"1308\" data-end=\"1543\">One user bluntly commented: \u201cThis storyline def seems familiar. The Substance???\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1308\" data-end=\"1543\">Another summed it up with: \u201cMaybe it will be the Deep Impact to The Substance\u2019s Armageddon.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">the substance rip off<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 poppy \ud83e\udd8b (@imnotpopbase) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/imnotpopbase\/status\/2003282349971374339?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 23, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1308\" data-end=\"1543\"><script src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1552\" data-end=\"1864\">The similarities appear to stem from a major change Murphy and co-creator Matthew Hodson made to the original comic. In the source material by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley, The Beauty revolves around a sexually transmitted disease that causes people to become physically perfect, but ultimately kills them.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">So the substance? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eHVLEsIEjY\">pic.twitter.com\/eHVLEsIEjY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 BOB (@bobussyy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bobussyy\/status\/2003244815543398524?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 22, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1552\" data-end=\"1864\"><script src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1866\" data-end=\"2164\">In the TV adaptation, that\u2019s been switched to a miracle drug, explicitly likened to GLP-1s like Ozempic. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/the-beauty-exclusive-ashton-kutcher-evan-peters-ryan-murphy-series?srsltid=AfmBOoqcrutGVdvcL3Cze-BLKY8DLdjHiJdvOw42eAFC0dh6SVXwVW-2\">Vanity Fair<\/a> also confirmed that while the drug is the main source of transformation, its \u201cpowers can also be sexually transmitted from one person to another\u201d, which\u2026 only adds fuel to the fire.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1866\" data-end=\"2164\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1976\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-08-at-16.48.55.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1144\" height=\"528\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2570\">People were quick to point out that The Beauty as a concept technically predates The Substance,\u00a0however, Murphy has changed the original details to reflect current times, which now makes it much more similar to The Substance. Yep, sounds way too familiar.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2913\" data-end=\"3190\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The Beauty is set to premiere on 21st January.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2913\"
