*Warning: Spoilers for Godzilla Minus Zero ahead*

At long last, Godzilla Minus Zero has stomped its way into cinemas, bringing the King of the Monsters back for another round of destruction. And while there’s no post-credits scene in the traditional sense, there is a fun little surprise right at the end.

Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the sequel arrives three years after Godzilla Minus One, aka one of the best Godzilla movies ever made. It went on to become a box office sensation and even bagged an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

Part of the reason it’s so great is because of its human-centric story. Taking place in post-war Japan, the plot followed former kamikaze pilot Koichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), who was struggling with survivor’s guilt. But when Godzilla begins terrorising Japan, he is forced to confront his past and fight to protect those he loves.

Despite seemingly defeating the monster in the finale, there were a couple of clues that his story wasn’t quite over. Firstly, a piece of Godzilla’s flesh began regenerating beneath the ocean. And secondly, Koichi’s partner Noriko (Minami Hamabe) was revealed to have a mysterious black mark on her neck.

Godzilla Minus Zero picks up two years later, with Japan slowly rebuilding after all the devastation. Just as life starts returning to normal, another terrifying threat emerges.

And this time, Godzilla isn’t the only giant monster causing chaos. The sequel also introduces the three-headed King Ghidorah.

We won’t spoil exactly how that plays out here. But one thing we can tell you is whether there’s anything worth waiting for once the credits start rolling.

Is there a Godzilla Minus Zero post-credits scene?

No, Godzilla Minus Zero doesn’t have a mid- or post-credits scene. But there is a little something waiting for those of you who stick around until the very end.

Once the credits have finished, the sound of Godzilla’s enormous footsteps can be heard, followed by his roar. It’s only a few seconds of audio, but it’s a pretty ominous reminder that the King of the Monsters is still out there.

After all, although Godzilla defeats King Ghidorah in the finale, he doesn’t stick around to celebrate. Instead, he disappears back into the ocean.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Yamazaki has included an audio-only tease. Godzilla Minus One also ended with the sound of the monster’s footsteps and roar, despite having no additional scene after the credits.

So, is the director simply giving fans one last scare, or could this be a hint that there’s more to come?

Will there be a third Godzilla Minus movie?

There’s no confirmation of Godzilla Minus Three (Godzilla Minus Minus One?) just yet. But thankfully, Yamazaki hasn’t ruled out returning to the franchise.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker admitted that the chances of him making another Godzilla movie are currently “about fifty-fifty.”

“I’m quite satisfied and happy with the current ending we have,” he explained. “That being said, if Godzilla Minus Zero is my last Godzilla film, that would make me a bit sad.”

Yamazaki currently has other projects lined up, including his first English-language Hollywood movie, Grandgear. But he made it clear that he’d like to revisit the monster’s world at some point.

And in a separate interview with Esquire, the director offered another encouraging update. “It would be great if we could do a third film,” he said. “But we have to have an offer before we embark on a new project.”
