Oscar-winning director Taika Waititi has hit back at critics who have given his latest film, Klara and the Sun, a pretty brutal reception, calling them \u201csad lost souls\u201d who failed to achieve their dreams of becoming artists.<\/p>\n
Klara and the Sun<\/a> is adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro\u2019s bestselling book<\/a> of the same name. The film is set in a dystopian future where androids are sold as companions for humans. It stars Jenna Ortega as Klara, an Artificial Friend who is bought by a teenager named Josie, played by Mia Tharia.<\/p>\n It is an emotional book and an equally emotional watch. But critics haven’t exactly been convinced by the final result.<\/p>\n The film currently has just 26 per cent from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, compared with a much stronger 78 per cent audience rating.<\/p>\n The Independent’s<\/a> Clarisse Loughrey awarded it two stars, describing it as \u201cboth a betrayal of Ishiguro\u2019s quiet, meditative vision and a poor imitation of Waititi\u2019s own, pre-Marvel work\u201d. Meanwhile, The Guardian’s<\/a> Peter Bradshaw described the film as \u201ca sentimental and laborious mess\u201d. LA Times’s<\/a> Tim Grierson called the film “disastrously twee\u201d, criticising its excessive sentimentality and lack of genuine emotional connection.
